Speedo Performance of the Week: Daniel Gyurta’s 200 Breast World Record

PHOENIX, Arizona, September 3. DANIEL Gyurta announced about a month ago that he was skipping the 200 breaststroke at the European championships, a move that his coach said would give the Hungarian a chance to recharge his batteries, so to speak, in his best event. Apparently it did not take long for Gyurta to get back to peak form in the 200 breast, as the 25-year-old broke his own world record in the short course meters event on Saturday at the FINA World Cup meet in Dubai.

Gyurta swam a 2:00.48 to beat his world record by 19 hundredths of a second. His previous record had been set in December 2009 at the European short course world championships. Gyurta was one hundredth slower than record pace at the 50, then fell off it by three tenths at the 100. Putting in a 30.89 on the third 50 kept Gyurta off the pace, then he popped off a 30.84 in the final 50 to get that world record.

Gyurta continues to impress in a long and distinguished career that began with a silver medal at the 2004 Olympics in the 200 breast and a gold medal in 2012, including three long course world championship titles along the way. Congratulations, Daniel. You’ve won our Speedo Performance of the Week.
