Speedo Grand Challenge Rolls On

IRVINE, California. May 27. THE second day of the Speedo Grand Challenge at the William Woollett Aquatic Center showcased more talent and fast swims from veterans and youngsters alike. With money still on the line, many professional swimmers put all they had into holding off young talent for an upset.

The first event of the day was the 200 meter freestyle. On the men's side, Dominick Meichtry (Cal) was the only swimmer to break 1:50 on his way to victory with a 1:49.73. For the women, Erin Reilly from Cal took down distance ace, Kate Ziegler (FISH) with her time of 2:01.73.

Tamas Kerekjarto (Trojans) cruised to his second victory of the competition, out-distancing himself from the field by over five seconds in the 400 IM. He touched the wall at 4:26.25. Kristen Caverly came back after a disappointing second place and loss of $1000 yesterday in the 200 I.M. to win the 400 I.M. today in 4:51.40 over Jessie Sshmitt's (NCA) 4:52.54.

Patrick Cary (UCSB) broke the 55 second barrier to win the 100 meter butterfly in 54.72. Olympian Dana Kirk held off youngster Tara Thomas (NOVA) in the women's 100 fly for first place. Kirk's time of 1:00.59 earned her first place to Thomas' 1:01.83.

FAST teammates Louis Vayo and Tyler Clary battled out the men's 200 backstroke. In the end it was Clary who touched first in 2:04.38 to Vayo's 2:04.85. Joanna Fargus came out the victor in the women's 200 backstroke, touching the wall in 2:15.19.

Dominick Meichtry from Cal won his second event of the evening in the 400 freestyle. He was the only finalist to break four minutes en route to winning in 3:57.09.
