Spanish Long Course Nationals: Rafael Munoz Completes Meet With Championship Record

BARCELONA, Spain, July 22. THE final day of swimming at the Spanish Long Course Nationals featured another meet record in Barcelona.

Rafael Munoz, who already owns the top-ranked time in the world in the men's 50 fly with a 23.45 from April, lowered the meet record in the sprint fly with a 23.97 for the win. He eclipsed his previous best time at the meet of 24.13 from 2007. Marcos Garcia took second in 24.41, while Tiago Venancio placed third in 24.60.

Claudia Dasca, who is ranked 13th in the world with a 16:27.97 from the European Junior Championships, won the women's 1500 free with a top time of 16:30.12. Xenia Vilarino took second in 16:43.75, while Marta Mayol completed the top three in 16:58.80.

Patricia Castro topped the women's 200 free in 1:59.16, while Melanie Costa Schmid took second in 2:00.37. Gemma Cristobal placed third in 2:03.54. Alex Sanchez held off Yerai Lebon, 1:51.30 to 1:51.78, in the men's 200 free. Gerard Rodriguez picked up third in 1:52.28.

Concepcion Badillo touched first in the women's 50 breast with a 32.91, while Berta Canto hit the wall in second with a 33.14. Cassandra Gimeno pocketed third-place honors in 33.23. Hector Monteagudo put up a 28.62 to win the men's 50 breast. Sergio Lloret (29.00) and Joaquin Abascal (29.10) placed second and third.

Angela San Juan Cisneros clocked a 27.29 to win the women's 50 fly, while Aida Marti Arasa finished second in 27.99. Mercedes Peris took third in 28.09.

Rufino Regueira cruised to victory in the men's 200 fly with a time of 2:01.67, while Diego Garcia touched a distant second in 2:04.15. Angel Gonzalez wound up third overall in 2:04.49. Victor Goicoechea won the men's 800 free in 8:07.53, while Marco Rivera took second in 8:08.28. Juan Luis Rodriguez placed third in 8:09.00.

In relay action, Marce Da Rocha, Sara Perez, Angela San Juan Cisneros and Castro won the women's 400 medley relay in 4:13.43. Miguel Rando, Melquiades Alvarez, Alex Villaecija and Brenton Cabello won the men's 400 medley relay in 3:43.15.
