Spanish Championships: Two Spanish National Records Tumble

MAJORCA, Spain, April 5. THE Spanish Championships held in Majorca featured a pair of national records falling on the second-to-last day of the meet.

Erika Villaecija Garcia became the first woman from her country to dip under 4:09 in the women's 400 free when she broke her own national record of 4:09.83 set last summer at the Paris Open. Today, Garcia completed her record-breaking performance with a time of 4:08.99.

Pablo Ordonez Mena then shot down the men's 200 fly national record with a time of 1:59.51 to become the initial Spaniard under 2:00 in the event. Jordi Pau and Jorge Perez owned the previous record with matching 2:00.00s set in 2001 and 2000, respectively.

Brenton Cabello Forns notched a meet record in the men's 200 IM with a time of 2:01.10, missing the 1991 national record of Martin Lopez-Zubero of 2:01.09 by the slimmest of margins.

Ignacio Fernandez Ordonez also set a meet record, crushing his previous standard of 8:05.65 from 2007, when he stopped the clock in 8:04.93 in the men's 800 free.

Another meet record fell as Mercedes Peris Minguet posted a time of 1:01.32 in the women's 100 back, while Gabriel Mangabeira came up short of the meet record in the men's 100 back when he hit the wall in 55.30.

In the splash-and-dash 50 frees, Tatiana Rouba Bieniarz won the women's title in 25.90, while Rafael Munoz Perez claimed the men's crown in 22.69.

National record holder Mireia Belmonte Garcia garnered the women's 200 fly title in 2:12.18.
