Spain Upsets Russia in FINA Synchronized Swimming World Trophy Meet

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, December 6.THE FINA Synchronised Swimming World Trophy concluded its fifth edition on a very high note on December 5, 2010, in Moscow, Russia. The three-day competition programme featured the Synchro Highlight Routine and the Thematic Duet (Dec. 3), the Thematic Team (Dec. 4) and the Combination (Dec. 5), the classification being made by totalling the scores of the four events. A Solo Exhibition took place on day 2 but was not judged.

The final podium was exclusively European, with Spain triumphing in all team events with a cumulative score of 389.375. Winning the Thematic Duet, Russia finished second with an accumulated total of 387.375 while newcomer Ukraine completed the podium with 381.000 points.

Falling short of the podium were the Canadians, who won last year at home, with a total of 378.875. The North American squad climbed the podium on one occasion, the Synchro Highlight Routine, to place third.

After winning at home in 2008, the Spanish squad renews with the victory, confirming their ambition to keep raising the standard in this innovative competition format where only the artistic impression of the routines is considered and the use of accessories is allowed. Russia, first in 2006 and 2007, continues to look strong while Ukraine clearly demonstrated they are serious podium contenders.
