Southwest Missouri State Sweeps Missouri Valley Swimming and Diving Titles

CARBONDALE, ILL, February 22. THE SMS women took the Missouri Valley Conference championship, and the SMS men claimed victory in the Missouri Valley Invitational at the Southern Illinois University Center in Carbondale, Ill, according to reports from the hosts and from the winning school.

SMS claimed its third straight Missouri Valley Conference women’s championship, finishing with 913 points, followed closely by SIU with 849. Illinois State was third with 768.50 points, followed by Evansville with 402.50 and Northern Iowa with 202. The Bears’ Katie Boarman was named the 2005 MVC Swimmer of the Year, and SMS coach Jack Steck was named the MVC Coach of the Year.

In the men’s Missouri Valley Invitational meet, SMS finished first with 746 points, defeating defending champion SIU who had 681. Evansville was third with 322 points. The Bears’ Cole Kalkbrenner and Ryan Maeker were honored as the 2005 Men’s Invitational Co-Divers of the meet. SMS coach Jim Huelskamp was named the men’s Diving Coach of the meet.

Individual winners for the SMS women’s team Saturday were Liz Geisler in the 1650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:11.15, Chauntelle Johnson in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 52.26, Katie Boarman in the 200-yard breaststroke finishing at 2:23.22, and Andi Rojas with a time of 2:05.62 in the 200-yard butterfly

Winner for the Bears in the men’s meet were Raichin Antonov in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 44.30, and Seth Johnson in the 200-yard breaststroke finishing at 2:00.24

SMS continued to dominate the relays with Raichin Antonov, Mitch Richards, Matt Beasley, and Andrew McBride taking the victory in the men’s 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 6:36.72, and Antonov, Richards, Ignacio Gayo, and Matt Beasley taking a victory in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 2:56.50. The SMS women won in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:29.03 with swimmers Erica Norgren, Marcy O’Neil, Rojas, and Johnson.

The Bears set Missouri Valley Conference Records in the women’s 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:34.87, 200-yard medley relay at 1:45.71, 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:32.42 and Boarman set the record in the 200-yard IM with new time of 2:04.93.

The SMS men set MVC records in the 400-yard medley relay at 3:19.35, 800-yard freestyle relay finishing with a time of 6:36.72, and 400-yard freestyle relay at 2:56.60. SMS also got MVC individual records with Beasley in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:48.38, Beasley in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:36.55, and Johnson in the 200-yard breaststroke at 2:00.24.
