Southwest Classic Invitational: International Field Turns in In-Season Racing

TUCSON, Arizona, May 5. THE first two days of swimming are in the bag at the Southwest Classic Invitational being held in Tucson, Ariz. The final day will consist of age group competition.

During the first day of distance swimming, Arizona's Alyssa Anderson won the women's 800 free in 9:03.60. Tucson Ford's Leone Vorster took second in 9:06.93, while ASU's Shannon Landgrebe placed third in 9:27.75. Hayden Thomas topped the men's 1500 free in 16:53.08, while Tucson Ford's Tyler Mattingly (17:21.72) and Lawrence Muldoon (18:40.78) rounded out the top three.

Vorster and Anderson swapped positions to open the second day as Vorster won the women's 200 free in 2:03.07. Anderson took second in 2:06.49. Landgrebe picked up third in 2:06.50. Tucson Ford's Darian Townsend turned in a 1:51.38 to win the men's 200 free. Santa Clara's Alex Wold (1:54.71) and Canada's Blake Worsley (1:55.63) placed second and third.

Tucson Ford's Amanda Beard cruised to victory in the women's 200 breast with a 2:35.90. Teammate Sara Borendame took second in 2:38.21, while Arizona's Eve Sarris placed third in 2:43.58. Tucson Ford's Clark Burckle clinched the men's 200 breast title in 2:16.74. Arizona's Carl Mickelson (2:26.34) and Santa Clara's Russ Payne (2:26.58) battled for second place.

Canada's Julia Wilkinson dominated the women's 100 back in 1:02.54, while Arizona's Sarah Denninghoff touched second in 1:05.17. Tucson Ford's Maggie Meyer placed third in 1:05.19. Tucson Ford went 1-2-3 in the men's 100 back with Matt Grevers winning in 55.66. Pro teammates Simon Burnett (57.28) and Darian Townsend (57.74) finished second and third.

Arizona's Ashley Evans topped the women's 200 fly in 2:24.64, while Tucson Ford's Erin Campbell (2:28.62) and AZAC's Sam Arellano (2:38.18) placed second and third. Santa Clara's Alex Wold (2:07.39) and Russ Payne (2:08.07) finished 1-2 in the men's 200 fly. JH Vivadelli touched third in 2:14.56.

Tucson Ford's Christine Magnuson and Arizona's Margo Geer deadheated in the women's 50 free with matching 26.37s. Arizona's Kait Flederbach wound up third in 26.74. Tucson Ford's Masa Kishida (23.59), Simon Burnett (23.76) and Matt Grevers (23.91) went 1-2-3 in the men's 50 free.

Santa Clara's Chloe Isleta, 13, won the women's 400 IM with a 5:07.40 out of a sparse field of seven. Borendame (5:28.33) and Tucson Ford's Natalie Ward, 13, (5:29.50) finished second and third. Canada's Alec Page cruised to victory in the men's 400 IM with a 4:31.96. Santa Clara's Alex Wold (4:40.01) and Tucson Ford's Eric Solis (4:51.28) completed the top three.

During the third timed finals session, Arizona's Lauren Smart won the women's 200 back in 2:21.14. ASU's Kallie Golden (2:22.72) and Tucson Ford's Maggie Meyer (2:23.12) finished second and third. Arizona's Cory Chitwood claimed the men's 200 back in 2:05.66. Canada's Tobias Oriwol (2:10.40) and Arizona's Ellis Miller (2:12.89) finished distant second and third.

Arizona's Margo Geer captured the women's 100 free title in 56.00, while Canada's Julia Wilkinson took second in 56.23. Tucson Ford's Leone Vorster placed third in 57.77. Tucson Ford's Darian Townsend posted a 50.33 to win the men's 100 free, while Matt Grevers (51.98) and Simon Burnett (52.11) went 2-3.

Tucson Ford's Amanda Beard doubled up on the breaststroke events today with a 1:11.67 for the women's 100 breast title. CUBU's Ellyn Baumgardner (1:13.30) and Arizona's Eve Sarris (1:13.52) placed second and third. Tucson Ford's Clark Burckle also doubled in the men's events with a 1:03.44 for the 100 breast. Arizona's Kevin Cordes took second in 1:05.08, while Phoenix Swim Club, and Swimming World's own, Jeff Commings placed third in 1:05.69.

Arizona's Alyssa Anderson touched out Amanda Beard, 2:22.07 to 2:22.28, in the women's 200 IM. Tucson Ford's Whitney Burnett placed third in 2:24.75. Darian Townsend cruised to victory in the men's 200 IM with a 2:04.57. Canada's Alec Page (2:11.17) and Ford's Adam Ritter (2:13.29) took second and third.

Christine Magnuson picked up the women's 100 fly title in 1:02.22, while ASU's Lizzy Luttrell touched second in 1:04.85. Tucson Ford's Erin Campbell earned third in 1:05.01. Masa Kishida won the men's 100 fly in 55.39, while Tucson Ford's Bryan O'Connor (56.70) and Arizona's Giles Smith (56.81) completed the top three.

Leone Vorster hit the wall in 4:23.56 to win the women's 400 free. Tucson Ford's Brianna Leverenz, 14, placed second in 4:29.87. ASU's Kallie Golden picked up third in 4:38.14. Men's 400 free results were not available.
