Southern California vs. Washington State

PULLMAN, Washington, October 21. JUNIOR Christel Simms won the 50y and 100y free while sophomore Stina Gardell was first in the 200y free and 200y back to lead the USC women's swim team to a season-opening Pac-12 win, 120-74, in its first-ever meeting against host Washington State in Pullman, Wash., on Friday (Oct. 21).

Gardell claimed the 200y free in 1:49.58 (1.29 off an NCAA ‘B' cut), almost five seconds ahead of WSU's second-place Emma Neely, while Trojan sophomore sprinter Kasey Carlson was third (1:54.17). Gardell later won the 200y back in 2:01.48 with junior teammate Yumi So finishing second in 2:04.01.

Trojan junior Haley Anderson, a member of the U.S. National team in the 800 meters, won the 1000y free without challenge in 10:00.15, leading a 1-2-3 USC win. Sophomore Lynette Lim was second (10:17.35) with senior co-captain Amanda Smith third (10:20.78).

USC sophomore Meghan Hawthorne led a four-woman sweep of the 200y IM with a 2:03.63, well ahead of second-place teammate Jessica Schmitt (2:05.20). Senior Ania Kowalczyk was third with junior Jordan Danny fourth.

Senior co-captain Katinka Hosszu, the NCAA's top swimmer in 2011, kicked off her final collegiate season with a win in one of her signature events, the 200y fly (1:57.12). Fellow senior Tanya Krisman was second in 1:59.56 as she and Hosszu both registered NCAA ‘B' cuts in the early-season swims. Smith and Trojan freshman Kate Davey completed the top 4 sweep in the event.

Hosszu's 4:52.70 was the fastest heat in the 500y free while Hawthorne clocked a 4:57.93. Danny's 2:17.37 (not much more than a second from an NCAA ‘B' cut) led the 200y breast while Schmitt's 2:18.58 was second.

Troy's 200y medley relay of Simms, Carlson, So and Parrish was first in 1:43.90 (1.20 off a ‘B' cut) while the quartet of Carlson, Simms, Parrish and Hosszu's 3:27.20 was fastest in the 400y free relay.

The teams will square off in another dual meet on Saturday (Oct. 22) at 11 a.m.
