Southern California vs. Arizona State

TEMPE, Arizona, November 12. THE No. 5 USC women’s swimming and diving team and the No. 8 men’s team swept their counterparts from host Arizona State, 198-99, and 198-97, respectively in Pac-12 action in Tempe on Saturday (Nov. 12).
The women improved to 4-0 overall, 3-0 in conference action while the men moved to 2-1, 1-1.

Junior Haley Anderson won the 1000y free (9.43.24) to kick off the individual events while Trojan freshman Cary Wright touched first in the men’s 1000y free (9:33.72).

Senior Katinka Hosszu won the 200y free, the first of two wins, in 1:46.83 (NCAA ‘B’) while sophomore Dimitri Colupaev claimed the men’s 200y free, also the first of two victories, in 1:36.96 (NCAA ‘B’), leading a 1-4 Trojan sweep in the event. Freshman Chad Bobrosky was second (1:38.51).

Juniors Yumi So (55.06) and Christel Simms (55.83) went 1-2 in the 100y back for the women and was followed by another 1-2 finish for the men by juniors Alex Lendrum (48.94) and Nick Karpov (50.01).

Freshman Andrew Malone won the men’s 100y breast in 57.12 while sophomore Kasey Carlson’s 1:01.82 (NCAA ‘B’) was second to ASU’s Rebecca Ejdervik.

Senior Amanda Smith led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200y fly with a 2:00.77, senior Tanya Krisman (2:00.78) and Anderson (2:00.84) touching right after. Junior Justin DiFederico won the men’s 200y fly in 1:49.87 while Wright was second (1:52.14).

Simms led three finishers in the top 4 of the 50y free with a 23.56 while freshman Vladimir Morozov notched a 19.63 (NCAA ‘B’) to win the men’s event with senior Jeff Daniels second (20.52).

Carlson came back to in the women’s 100y free in 50.49 with Simms in second (50.82) while Daniels led a 1-2-3 sweep in the men’s race in 45.55.

Sophomore Meghan Hawthorne won the 200y back in 1:59.94 and Lendrum and Karpov went 1-2 again in the men’s race in 1:45.50 (NCAA ‘B’) and 1:51.43, respectively.

Hosszu’s 2:13.32 (NCAA ‘B’) led a 1-2-3 sweep in the women’s 200y breast with junior Jessica Schmitt second in 2:13.74 (NCAA ‘B’) and junior Jordan Danny third (2:17.09). Morozov, thriving as a breaststroker early this season, led another sweep in the 200y breast, winning in 2:04.72.

Anderson won the 500y free in 4:49.64 and Bobrosky won the men’s race in 4:35.28. So (54.33, NCAA ‘B’) and freshman Chase Bloch (49.61) each claimed wins in the 100y fly while Gardell (2:00.97, NCAA ‘B’) and Colupaev (1:50.52) swept the 200y IM.

Senior diver Victoria Ishimatsu remained unbeaten on the year, winning the 1-meter (321.53) and the 3-meter (345.38).

The quartet of Simms, Carlson, So and Smith won the women’s 200y medley in an NCAA ‘B’ cut of 1:41.43 while Carlson, Hosszu, junior Lindsay Parrish and So won in 1:33.90.

For the men, Lendrum, Colupaev, junior Matt Voell and Morozov won the 200y medley in 1:28.90 (NCAA ‘B’) and Daniels, sophomore Jack Wagner, Colupaev and Lendrum won the 200y free relay in 1:20.89 (NCAA ‘B’).
