Southern California Announces Strong Men’s, Women’s Recruiting Classes

LOS ANGELES, California, November 17. A class featuring some of the top swimmers and divers in the nation, including a World Championship gold medalist, American, national and state record holders, prep All-Americans and scholastic standouts, have signed national letters of intent with the Trojans, USC head swimming coach Dave Salo announced on Wednesday (Nov. 16).

The standout group signing with the women's squad includes Jasmine Tosky from Palo Alto, Calif., Kendyl Stewart from Carlsbad, Calif., Brianna Weinstein from Irvine, Calif., Henriette Stenkvist from Cary, N.C., Nikki Chang from La Mirada, Calif., diver Natalie Kalibat from Princeton, N.J., and transfer Andrea Kropp from Santa Clarita, Calif.

The highly touted men's class includes Paul "Maclin" Davis and transfer Dakota Hodgson, both from Nashville, Tenn., Ted Singley from Southlake, Texas, Gottfried Eisenberger from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Jeff Swanston from Newmarket, Ontario, transfer Brock Redondo from Mission Viejo, Calif., and diver Spencer Madanay from Honolulu, Hawaii.

Women's Signees

Tosky, who attends Palo Alto (Calif.) High, won a gold medal at the 2011 World Championships after swimming a prelim leg of the U.S. 800m free relay, which went on to win gold. She also swam at the 2010 Short Course World Championships and helped the U.S. set an American record in prelims. The 2011 San Jose Sports Hall of Fame Female High School Athlete of the Year, Tosky won the 100m breast and 100m fly at the 2011 Junior Nationals and also won three golds at the 2010 Junior Pan Pacs (200m IM, 400m and 800m free relays) as well as a silver in the 200m free and bronzes in the 100m free and 100m fly. She set a national prep record in the 100y fly at the 2011 CIF Central Coast Section Championships, erasing the oldest high school record on the books with a 51.92 (erasing a mark by Misty Hyman). She was a five-time finalist at the 2010 U.S. Nationals.

Stewart, who preps at La Costa Canyon High in Carlsbad, Calif., won a silver medal at the 2011 World Junior Championships in the 50y fly and was a fifth in the 100y fly and sixth in the 200y back. At the 2011 CIF San Diego Division Championships, she set a national age group record (15-16) with a 52.43 in the 100y fly, breaking a mark held by Katie Hoff. She also owns the 100y fly record in the 13-14 age group. She is in her second year as a member of the U.S. National Junior team.

Weinstein, who attends Irvine (Calif.) High, earned All-Orange County honors as a 2011 junior and is an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 400m IM and the 200m breast. She was a 2011 Junior Nationals ‘B' finalist in the 200m breast and at the 2011 CIF Southern Section Championships, she was third in the 100m breast and fourth in the 200y IM. She represented the U.S. at the 2009 Maccabiah Games in Israel, winning silver in the juniors 200m breast.

Chang, who preps at Sonora High in La Habra, Calif., was fifth in the 1500m free at the 2011 Junior Nationals, won the ‘B' final of the 400m free and swam in the 200m free. An Olympic Trials qualifier in the 400m IM, she was a 2011 runner-up in the 500y free at the CIF Southern Section Championships and was third in the 200y free.

Stenkvist, a Swedish native who attends Panther Creek High in Cary, N.C., is a seven-time North Carolina state champion. She is the state record holder in the 200y back in multiple age groups and also holds the 500y free mark (15-16). She was the 2011 Co-MVP of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association's 4-A Championships after winning the 100y and 200y free (she once held the state record in the latter race). She swam for Sweden at the 2010 World Championships, reaching the semifinals of the 100m and 200m back and swimming the 200m free. At the 2010 European Junior Championships, she won the 400m free and was third in the 200m back, and, at the 2010 European Championships, she earned a silver as the leadoff on Sweden's 400m free relay. The Swedish record holder in the 200m back, she won that race at the 2011 Swedish Championships and was second in the 200m free. She competed in a variety of events at the 2011 U.S. Junior Nationals, reaching the finals of the 100m and 200m back.

Kropp, a transfer from Princeton, won 2011 Ivy League titles in the 100y and 200y breast last year as a freshman, helping the Tigers to a team championship. She tied for fourth in the 200y IM and set school records in both breast events. She prepped at Flintridge Sacred Heart in La Canada Flintridge, Calif., where she was a nine-time prep All-American. In 2010, she was fifth in the 200m breast at the 2010 U.S. Nationals and reached the bonus final of the 100m breast. She won the 200m breast at the 2010 Junior Nationals.

Kalibatt, who attends the Lewis School of Princeton, was seventh on synchro platform at the 2011 U.S. Nationals and 10th on synchro 3-meter. She is a seven-time Junior National qualifier and a 2010 AAU national champion on 3-meter and platform. She was the Eastern Interscholastic Champion on 1-meter from 2009-2011 and was the 2011 New Jersey state champion on 1-meter.

Men's Signees

Davis, who attends Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tenn., represented the U.S. at the 2011 World Junior Championships, winning gold medals in the 50m and 100m fly and in the 400m medley relay. A member of the U.S. National Junior Team for two years, he won titles in the 100y fly (setting a state record), 100y back and the 400y free relay at the 2011 Tennessee State Championships, earning Swimmer of the Meet honors. The 2011 Middle Tennessee High School Swimming Association Boys Swimmer of the Year, he was the 2011 U.S. Nationals ‘B' final winner in the 100m fly and was the 18-and-under champion.

Hodgson transfers to USC from Auburn, where he swam in 2011 as a freshman (he is sitting out this season to train for the U.S. Olympic Trials). While in high school (he was home-schooled), Hodgson, a club teammate of Davis' at the Nashville Aquatic Club, was a two-time junior national champion in the 200y fly and a 2008-09 U.S. Junior National Team member. A prep All-American, he qualified for the 2008 United States Olympic Trials in the 200m fly.

Singley, who preps at Carroll Senior High in Southlake, Texas, is a 2011-12 National Junior Teamer who was 19th in the 1500m free at the 2011 U.S. Nationals. He was second in the 500y free at the 2011 Texas UIL State Swimming Championships. A Scholastic All-American, he is also a rising open water swimmer.

Eisenberger, a prep All-American and team co-captain, attends Pine Crest High in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. A middle-distance freestyler and backstroker, he earned 2010 Miami Herald All-County first team honors. He recently was second in the 100y free and third in the 200y free at the 2011 Florida State Championships.

Swanston, a Canadian native, represented his country at the 2011 World Junior Championships, reaching the final of the 200m back and the semifinals in the 100m and 50m back. A Canadian junior national teamer, he swam at the 2010 Junior Pan Pac Champ.

Redondo comes to USC after competing for Army as a 2011 freshman. As a cadet, he won the 400y IM, was second in the 500y free and was third in the 1650y free at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships. Redondo, who broke Army freshman records in the 400y IM and the 500y free, earned All-Patriot League second team honors. He prepped at Capistrano Valley (Calif.) High, where he was a CIF champion and a regular national qualifier.

Madanay, a two-time prep All-American from Punahou School in Honolulu, Hawaii, has three Hawaii state diving titles (2009-2011) and is the state record holder on 1-meter. He was third on 1-meter in the 2011 Age Group Nationals and 22nd on 3-meter at the 2011 Junior Nationals.
