South Carolina Short Course State Championships

ROCK HILL, South Carolina, February 8. THE 2011 South Carolina Short Course State Championships took place Feb. 3-6 in Rock Hill, S.C. As it has for years, Y-Spartaquatics (YSSC) dominated the competition, scoring 2,333 points during the course of the meet. Mount Pleasant Swim Club (MPSC) took second with 1,105.5 points, while the Charleston Southern Marlins Racing Team (SMRT) finished third 891.5 points.

Girls' Results

YSSC's Haley Lips won seven events on the girls' side, winning the highpoint award for the 15-18 age group. Lips, a member of the U.S. National Junior Team, won the 100 (52.15), 200 (1:50.54), 500 (4:58.85), and 1650 free (17:08.98), the 100 (56.52) and 200 fly (2:03.99), and 400 IM (4:25.32). Teammate Annie Gillig also won two events, the 200 back (2:04.60) and 200 IM (2:08.03). Additionally, the YSSC girls won all three relays, the 400 free (3:34.78), 800 free (7:40.52), and 400 medley (4:01.04).

Spartan Swim School's Lauryl Williams won both the 50 free (24.22) and 100 breast (1:04.94), while Myrtle Beach Riptides' Keenan Lineback grabbed the 1000 free win in 10:20.08. Swim Spartanburg's Chrissy Oberg won the 100 back in 56.46, and Rock Hill RAYS' Izzi Woodard took the 200 breast in 2:24.02.

Notably, Riptides' Megan Kingsley won all 10 of her events in the 13-14 age group. In some cases, she beat the fastest time from the 15-18 age group. Her wins included the 100 Free (52.78), 200 Free (1:52.19), 1000 Free (10:37.89), 100 Back (57.15), 200 Back (2:04.95), 200 Breast (2:23.31), 100 Fly (56.18), 200 Fly (2:00.07), 200 IM (2:06.20), and 400 IM (4:27.70).

Led by Lips and Gillig, the YSSC girls claimed the team title with 1463 points, while SMRT (700.5) and MPSC (384) rounded out the top three, both with impressive performances from younger swimmers.

Boys' Results

MPSC and YSSC did battle in the boys events, but YSSC did win the boys' team title, 870 to 721.5 points. David Ingraham and Jared Kauffman led the way for the YSSC boys in the 15-18 age group, combining for five event wins. Ingraham, a rising freshman at the University of Virginia, won the 200 fly (1:51.03) and 200 IM (1:54.31) and tied MPSC's Matthew Adams for the win in the 100 back (52.55). Kauffman, who will next year swim at the Ohio State University, swept the breaststroke events, the 100 (58.01) and 200 (2:07.49). The YSSC boys won the 400 medley relay in 3:30.03.

MPSC, meanwhile, won nine 15-18 boys' events. In addition to Adams' win in the 100 back, the Lierley brothers, Jonathan and Zachary, each won three races. Jonathan, who will swim at the University of Pittsburgh next year, won the 100 free (47.09), 200 free (1:41.18), and 100 fly (50.63). Brother Zachary took the 500 free (4:39.75), 200 back (1:55.31), and 400 IM (4:00.19). Dirk Bell, also of MPSC, took the 1000 (9:20.94) and 1650 free (15:54.80), and MPSC won both free relays, the 400 (3:11.86) and 800 (6:56.22).

Spartan Swim School's Alex Wood won the only non-YSSC or MPSC victory, taking the 50 free in 21.64. With the top two teams well clear of their competition, the Rock Hill RAYS won a tight battle for third in the boys' column, with 320 points.
