South Carolina at Clemson

CLEMSON, South Carolina, November 3. THE Clemson and South Carolina Swimming and Diving teams met Saturday at McHugh Natatorium, with the Clemson men winning 206-97 and the women falling 157-143. The men improve to 5-1 (3-1 ACC) on the season, while the women fall to 1-5 (1-3 ACC). For the Carolina women, it was their first win of the season, pushing their record to 1-4, while the men fell to 0-5 on the young season.

The men came out of the gates firing on all cylinders. The 200 medley relay group of Jay Crout, Andy Bergren, Adam Farnham, and Stephen Russell set a pool record of 1:31.62, blowing away the 1:31.77 mark set last season. Sean Geary (9:34.42) then led a sweep in the 1000 free, along with freshman David Gordon and sophomore Andrew Cunningham.

Dan Mengering won the 200 free and 500 free and Attila Ruszka picked up a win in the 200 breast and Mark Vahle won the 50 free, where he is still undefeated on the season. Other wins came from Andy Bergren in the 200 breast, Tom Recko in the 200 back, and Stephen Russell in the 100 free.

Perhaps the most impressive performance of the day, however, came from senior Adam Farnham, who notched four wins. Farnham was the third leg of the pool-record 200 medley relay group, won the 200 fly, 100 fly, and was also on the Tigers' first place 400 free relay group. In all, the Clemson men won 12 out of 16 events.

The women were led by Rachel Regone, who also had an outstanding individual performance, winning the 50 free, 100 free, swam anchor n the winning 200 medley relay group, and led off the winning 400 free relay group. Junior Michelle Parkhurst also turned the trick, winning the 100 and 200 backstroke, as well as joining Regone on the 200 medley relay and 400 free relay.

Sophomore Katrina Obas won the 100 and 200 breaststroke and teamed with Regone and Parkhurst on the winning 200 medley relay. Freshman Sarah Smith had a solid meet for the Tigers, finishing third in the 500 and 1000 free.
