South Australian State Championships: Matt Targett Lowers South Australia All-Comers Record in 50 Free

ADELAIDE, Australia, January 29. The men's 50m freestyle final was a wall of whitewash as three World Champions battled it out for top spot. Matthew Targett came out on top in a new personal best of 21.98 beating his previous time of 22.09 set at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai.
His time was well under the Olympic A qualifying time of 22.11 and he managed to demolish the SA All-comers record he set this morning of 22.27. Targett's relay World Champion teammates Matt Abood and James Magnussen were left to fight it out for silver. Abood (22.15) was able to secure silver over Magnussen (22.41) who was out touched at the wall.

Minutes later Targett was back in the pool for the final of the men's 50m butterfly where he powered through to take gold in 23.74, setting another SA All-comers record in the process.

Hot on Targett's heels was 18-year-old Jayden Hadler who touched just behind in 24.10 to claim silver with Hamish Rose third in 25.08.

Targett said he wanted to compete at the SA State Open Championships to test out the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre before the Australian Championships are held here in March.

"I want to have the best preparation possible, the reason I'm here is to test out the pool and after that result [in the 50m freestyle] my confidence is now through the roof," he said.

Blair Evans was at it again when she cruised through the final of the women's 200m IM in an A qualifying time of 2:12.20 taking gold and re-setting the SA All-comers record she took in this morning's heat.

The women's 100m backstroke came down to the touch with Sophie Edington leading in the final 50m a fingernail ahead of Emily Seebohm. Seebohm pushed through to the wall and just managed to edge out Edington by 0.06 of a second. Third place went to Jenni O'Neil in 1:02.94.

The men's 200m backstroke final saw Hayden Stoeckel pick up his first gold medal in front of a home crowd when he stopped the clock at 2:01.48. Stoeckel's time is still a fair way off his international rival Ryosuke Irie's time of 1:54.02, set at the recent WA State Championships.

Daniel Tranter topped off a successful meet with silver in the men's 200m backstroke in a time of 2:03.31.
