South African High School Championships: Day One Features Plenty of Records

EAST LONDON, South Africa, March 1. KWAZULU Natal's Charl van Zyl, Chad le Clos and Rene Warnes kept the statisticians busy as they rewrote the record books on the opening day of the South African National High Schools Championships held at the Joan Harrison Swimming Pool in East London.

Competing in the 17 to 19 years category, Van Zyl turned on the speed in the 50 meter backstroke to clock 27.22, dipping under Greg Main-Maillie's previous SA schools best of 27.55.

Le Clos, in action in the 15 to 16 years age group, completed the 200 meter individual medley in 2:12.03, bettering the previous national schools mark of 2:12.45, held by another KwaZulu Natal swim star, Wesley Gilchrist.

Warnes kept the KwaZulu Natal flag flying briskly in the women's competition, as she set a new SA School record of 4: 29.65 in the 13 to 16 years competition. The previous record stood behind the name of Kathryn Meaklim at 4:30.43.
