Stephen Cheng has given Southern Methodist University his verbal commitment. Cheng is from Flower Mound, Texas, in the greater Dallas area. The backstroker and IMer swims for Lakeside Aquatic Club.

Cheng said,

“I chose SMU because I felt like the right fit for me both in and out of the pool. I believed that I could maximize my potential with the opportunities that the university provided. Super stoked to see what the next 4 years has in store for me!”

His best times are:

  • 100 Back 50.56
  • 200 Back 1:48.81
  • 200 IM 1:53.30
  • 400 IM 4:04.93

The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American attends Flower Mound High School. At the 2016 Texas 6A State Championships his highest finish came in the 100 backstroke (51.27) where he was ninth. This summer Cheng finished third in the 200 back (2:05.59) at the Austin site of the Futures Championships.

The Mustang men were runner ups at last year’s American Athletic Conference Championships. Cheng would have been an A finalist in the 200 backstroke. Sophomore Bartosz Krzyzaniak finished third (1:44.44). Cheng will have a year to train with him once he starts school in Dallas next fall. Cheng would also have been a 100 backstroke B finalist last season.
