SMU Classic, Day Two

DALLAS, Texas, October 30. THE USC women’s swimming and diving team, paced by two wins apiece by senior Lyndsay DePaul and junior Katinka Hosszu, finished first at the 2010 SMU Invite after winning 15 of 16 events, including seven of eight on Saturday (Oct. 30) in Dallas.

In a meet in which eight swimmers and one diver compete, with only one swimmer per heat (A and B finals), Troy won with 420 points. Host SMU was second (314) with Purdue third (310), Louisville fourth (288) and Rice fifth (220).

USC opened the second day of competition by taking the 400y free relay as freshman Kasey Carlson, seniors Presley Bard and DePaul and freshman Christel Simms won in 3:21.52, more than five seconds ahead of second-place Purdue.

Hosszu followed with a win in the 500y free, touching in 4:45.44, almost three seconds ahead of second-place finisher Lauren Roth of Purdue.

Bard was next up, claiming first in the 200y back in 1:57.57, nicely ahead of SMU’s Therese Svendsen (1:59.07). DePaul followed with a win in the 200y breast in 2:14.10, almost four seconds ahead of Louisville’s Therese Bergstrom (2:17.83).

Carlson kept the winning streak alive in the 100y free, racing to first in 50.37, edging SMU’s Nina Rangelova’s 50.44.

Hosszu then notched her second win of the evening, taking the 200y fly in 1:56.39, well ahead of SMU’s Denisa Smolenova (2:00.86). DePaul became the second two-time winner of the night next in the 200y IM, hitting the wall in 1:58.85, almost five seconds ahead of Purdue’s Allie Smith (2:03.75).

USC closed out the meet with a final victory in the 200y free relay as Carlson, Bard, Hosszu and Simms won in 1:32.58, edging SMU’s 1:33.78.
