SYDNEY – Irish triple Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michelle Smith will compete in a lucrative one-day “skins” event in Sydney on August 30. Australians Susan O’Neill and Samantha Riley, American Gary Hall Jr. and Finland’s Jani Sievinen have also confirmed they will take part.
Smith, who won two individual medley events and the 400m freestyle at last year’s Olympic Games, has agreed to compete in Sydney, six days after the European Championships in Spain.
Under the “skins” rules, swimmers in each event compete in a series of elimination races until just one competitor is left. The 12 events carry a total prize money of $74,000.
