Short Stature Doesn’t Slow Down Nadine Day

By Emily Sampl

BOULDER, Colorado, February 20. NADINE Day might not be the tallest swimmer perusing the pool deck, but that certainly hasn't stopped her from achieving big things in the water.

Standing at just 5'2" with shoes on, Day hasn't let her height be a disadvantage. According to the newly-updated short course meters rankings for 2007, Nadine is ranked in the top 10 in the 35-39 age group in every event except the 50 back, including top times in the 50, 100 and 200 breast, 100 and 200 fly, and 200 and 400 IM. Of all the events, her favorite is the 400 IM.

"I like all four strokes," she said. "The 100 and 200 IM are over too quickly to enjoy swimming all four strokes."

Considered by most swimmers to be a distance event, the 400 IM is actually one of the shorter races Day swims. She entered her first open water race at age 8, and also enjoys competing in the Waikiki Roughwater swim in Hawaii.

Outside the pool, Day is quite the busy bee. She has her own physical therapy business in which she works mainly with swimmers in rehabbing their injuries, and she also gives stroke clinics around the country. To top it all off, Day is the Illinois LMSC (Local Masters Swimming Committee) Chair and is on the USMS Board of Directors. Her schedule can be jam-packed at times, but her love for swimming makes it all worthwhile.

"Swimming is my passion in life. I love to compete and race, and I am glad that USMS gives adults an opportunity to return to swimming," she said.

Day plans to swim the rest of her life, and is shooting for top 10 rankings in every event. She also aspires to swim every event in all three pool lengths (SCM, SCY, LCM), a goal she refers to as the "triple check off challenge." At this point, it appears she's well on her way.
