Short Course World Champs, Day One: Sandeno, Descenza Sweep the 200 Fly

INDIANAPOLIS, October 7. THE US duo of Kaitlin Sandeno and Mary Descenza took one-two to sweep the women’s 200m butterfly final.

Descenza led for the first 160 meters, with Aussies Jessica Schipper and Felicity Galvez, and Canada’s Audrey LaCroix hanging tough through the 150. But Sandeno split 32.69 for her final 50 — more than a second faster than anyone else in the field – to seal the victory in 2:06.95. Descenza held on for the silver in 2:07.79, with LaCroix third in 2:08.35.

Afterwards Sandeno, who has the 400 IM and 800 free left to swim tonight, said matter-of-factly: “One down, two to go.”
