Short Course World Champs, Day 4: Flash! World Record Falls to Crocker in 50 Butterfly

INDIANAPOLIS, October 10. IAN Crocker added the 50 butterfly to his list of short course world records (100 butterfly; 100 freestyle) slamming the wall at 22.71, bursting the Geoff Huegill mark of 22.74.

Matt Welsh (AUS) was also under 23 seconds (22.91) but he ran afoul of the 15 meter underwater limit and was disqualified, leaving silver to 50 freestyle winner Mark Foster (GBR), 23.22, and bronze to Duje Draganja (CRO; Cal-Berkley) at 23.26.

Foster has medaled all four times this event has been contested in the short course World Championships, including golds in 1999 and 2000.

Crocker was confident but not arrogant. “I thought I could do it, but I didn’t expect it.”

— D. Scott

He worked on improving his technique in the final to get the edge needed for the record. “I needed to get a little bit of a better start and stay under water for a little longer, so that’s what I worked on tonight, and I think it helped.”
