Sette Colli Trophy: Fran Halsall Wins Duel With Ranomi Kromowidjojo, Aschwin Wildeboer Sets Meet Record

ROME, Italy, June 18. THE second evening of long course meter action at the Sette Colli Trophy meet held in Italy featured several strong swims by the international field assembled.

Fran Halsall threw down another 53-second women's 100 free within a week with a victorious effort of 53.72. That swim fell just short of her top-ranked 53.61 from British Nationals last week. The performance also beat Femke Heemskerk's meet record of 54.19 set in 2010. Ranomi Kromowidjojo picked up second tonight in 54.05, off her fifth-ranked season best of 54.00 from March. Meanwhile, Jeanette Ottesen took third in 54.50, shy of her eighth-ranked 54.16 from April. Notably, Marleen Veldhuis (55.00) and Federica Pellegrini (55.19) touched fourth and fifth.

Aschwin Wildeboer clipped the meet record in the men's 100 back with a triumphant time of 53.67. That swim eclipsed the 53.70 set by Randall Bal back in 2008, and moved Wildeboer to sixth in the world rankings this year. Aristeidis Grigoriadis placed second in 54.91, while Liam Tancock cruised to third in 55.00. Tancock's top time this year is a third-ranked 53.44.

Alia Atkinson pushed into a seventh-ranked tie in the women's 50 breast with a winning 31.06. That swim matched Rebecca Ejdervik's time from March. Dorothea Brandt placed second in 31.68, while Natasha Waitzer earned third in 31.69. Brandt already has a fourth-ranked 30.83 to her credit, while Waitzer improved to 24th in the rankings.

Zsuzsanna Jakabos crushed the field in the women's 200 fly with a time of 2:07.67. She improved her previously ninth-ranked season best of 2:07.86 set in April, and leapfrogged Jessicah Schipper (2:07.78) for eighth in the world. Denise Riccobono touched second in 2:10.90, while Emanuela Albenzi earned third in 2:11.97.

Cameron van der Burgh clinched the men's 50 breast title in 27.62, while his fastest time this year (27.24) stands atop the mountain in the world rankings. Hendrik Feldwehr and Fabio Scozzoli tied for second with matching 27.82s. Feldwehr ranks third with a season-best 27.34, while Scozzoli stands ninth with a 27.72.

Lotte Friis claimed the women's 800 free crown in 8:25.57, but has a third-ranked 8:24.52 to her credit this year. Joanne Jackson finished well behind with a second-place 8:34.54. Martina Rita Caramignoli posted a third-place 8:36.43.

Samuel Pizzetti cruised to victory in the men's 800 free with a 7:52.68. His top time this year puts him second in the world with a 7:49.79. Sun Yang holds the fastest time this year with a stunning 7:44.12 from April. Federico Colbertaldo placed second in 7:55.34 for eighth in the world rankings, while Luca Baggio grabbed third in 7:56.50. Rocco Potenza also cleared 8:00 with a fourth-place 7:58.08.

Pawel Korzeniowski snagged the men's 200 fly crown in 1:56.32, while Chad Le Clos finished second in 1:57.12. Ioannis Drymonakos picked up third in 1:57.78 with Francesco Pavone (1:57.79) and Niccolo Beni (1:57.99) all clearing 1:58 in a close battle for third. Korzeniowski's season best is a fifth-ranked 1:55.64, while Le Clos has been 1:56.74 for 16th in the rankings.

Sophie Edington touched out Elizabeth Simmonds, 1:00.76 to 1:00.88, in the women's 100 back. Edington's top time this year is a 23rd-ranked 1:00.70, while Simmonds blasted through the 1:00 barrier for a fifth-ranked 59.86 in Britain earlier this week. Sharon Van Rouwendaal rounded out the top three in 1:01.24.

Kirsty Coventry captured the women's 400 IM in 4:38.18, off her fourth-ranked season best of 4:37.21 from May. Stefania Pirozzi finished second in 4:40.48 for 14th in the world rankings, while Kathryn Meaklim touched third in 4:43.42.

Luca Marin nabbed the men's 400 IM title in 4:17.28. Matteo Pelizzari posted a second-place 4:20.58, while Riaan Schoeman wound up third in 4:21.21. Sebastiaan Verschuren snared the men's 200 free in 1:48.41, while Macro Belotti (1:48.68) and Filippo Magnini (1:48.95) finished second and third.
