Serbia Claims Gold at FINA World Junior Men’s Water Polo Championships

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, September 5.THE nine-day competition featuring the world's 20 best junior men's teams concluded on a high note in the welcoming city of Volos (GRE) with the Serbians crowned as new World Junior Champions.

After losing to the Spaniards by a narrow margin in their first face-off during the preliminary round (5-6), the Serbians revamped their winning attitude to impose a crushing victory to their rivals (9-6) in the final match taking place on Sunday September 4. Serbia had won the bronze at the last edition in 2009.

The battle for the minor medal played out between Greece and Australia, with the home squad winning by a two goal advantage (7-5) in front of a cheering crowd. Greece had finished second in 2009 after losing to Croatia.

At the top of their respective group after the preliminaries, Italy and Croatia fought for the fifth place in the final round. The Italians eventually beat the defending champions 12-11. Montenegro and Hungary settled for seventh and eighth place, respectively.

The tournament's Most Valuable Player was Marton Gyorgy Vamos (HUN) while Dimitride Risticevic (SRB) and Bence Batori (HUN) were voted the Most Valuable Goalkeeper and Leading Scorer, respectively.
