Second Day of Group Play Complete in Women’s Water Polo at Worlds

MELBOURNE, Australia, March 21. THE second day of group play concluded in women's water polo at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia.

Group A
Russia doubled up China, 16-8, in the second day of Group A competition. Three Russians, Natalia Shepelina, Sofya Konukh and Ekaterina Pantyulina, accounted for hat tricks, while Sun Yujun paced China with three goals as well.

Spain dominated Germany, 15-6, as both Miriam Lopez-Escribano and Jennifer Pareja tallied four goals apiece for Spain. Teammate Blanca Gil also scored a hat trick with three goals. Monika Kruszona and Mandy Zoellner paced the Germans with two goals.

Group B
Canada downed Brazil, 6-3, in a low-scoring Group B affair. Tara Campbell totaled half of Canada's scoring with a hat trick, while Flavia Fernandes was the lone scorer for Brazil with three goals.

In one of the biggest thrashings of the women's matches, Australia destroyed Puerto Rico, 26-1. Nikita Cuffe and Kate Gynther totaled six goals each, while Gemma Hadley (5) and Suzie Fraser (3) each recorded a hat trick for Australia. Paola Medina scored the lone goal for Puerto Rico.

Group C
The United States rolled over Kazakhstan, 13-5, in Group C play. Brenda Villa led all scorers with three goals for the U.S., while Assel Jakayeva paced Kazakhstan with two goals.

In the other Group C match, Greece pounded the Netherlands, 14-6. Georgia Lara notched a match-high four goals, while teammate Evangelia Moraitidou connected for three goals for Greece. Iefke Van Belkum led the Netherlands with three goals.

Group D
Hungary crushed New Zealand, 17-7, in Group D play. Aniko Pelle went off with six goals, while teammate Agnes Primasz tickled the twine five times for Hungary. Rebecca McGuinness posted a hat trick for New Zealand with three goals.

In the other match, Italy drubbed Cuba, 17-5, but a box score is not available for individual stats.
