Scotland’s Mark Szaranek Swaps College Commitment From Michigan to Florida

DUNFERMLINE, Scotland, November 1. LAST night, Scotland’s Mark Szaranek changed his collegiate plans, and instead of heading to Ann Arbor to be a future Wolverine, he’s now committed to competing for Florida’s Gregg Troy.

Szaranek is a versatile swimmer, as the Auchmuty High School senior is talented in freestyle, butterfly and individual medley events. His best event might be the 200 IM, as he was a semifinalist in that event at the 2012 British Olympic Trials with a 2:05.65. One year later, he improved to 2:02.49 in his bronze medal swim at the European junior championships this past July.

According to his profile on ScottishSwimming.com, he also lists both butterflys, 400 IM and the 100 and 200 free as his top events. He holds a long course time of 4:30.73 in the 400 IM, 54.27 in the 100 fly, 2:03.73 in the 200 fly, 51.64 in the 100 free and 1:53.21 in the 200 free.

Szaranek is a part of Carnegie Swim club in Scotland, and is coached by his father, John. In addition to being a part of the British team at the junior European championships, Szaranek is Scottish national age group champion and holds at least seven Scottish national age group records.
