Schipper Sweeps Fly Events With Championship Standard in 100 Fly

VICTORIA, British Columbia, Aug. 19. AUSTRALIA’S Jessicah Schipper continued her incredible run at the 2006 Mutual of Omaha Pan Pacific Championships by dominating the 100-meter butterfly on Saturday.

The newly-minted world-record holder in the 200 fly, Schipper closed out a meet record with a 57.30 to finish more than a second in front of silver-winning Rachel Komisarz of the United States. Schipper’s effort erased the meet standard of 57.88 previously held by both Jenny Thompson and Natalie Coughlin.

No one even came close from the opening of the race as Schipper met the halfway point in 27.04, before coming home in 30.26.

Meanwhile, the United States swept second and third as Komisarz touched in 58.75 and Mary Descenza garnered bronze in 59.03.

After completely owning the top of the podium during the first two nights of the meet to the tune of 12 gold medals, the Americans looked at a three-event losing streak after the 100 fly.
