At 20 years old, Santo Condorelli was the youngest swimmer in the final of the 100 freestyle, and he showed no apparent fear, finishing in fourth place in his world championships debut.

It felt “a lot less anxiety-ridden than the semi was,” he said. “It was fun.”

Condorelli burst onto the international sprinting scene with a 47.98 at the Pan American Games just a few weeks earlier, and he said having the experience of racing there helped him mentally when he arrived at the world championships.

“Pan Ams was our (Canada’s) focus, obviously being at home,” he said. “We were just supposed to have fun with it, and whatever happens, happens. The rest was bonus.”

Condorelli spent time this year training in Russia with Vladimir Morozov and at Canyons Aquatic Club with Coley Stickels, where he honed his technique. He said he still has trouble holding his body line on the back half of races, but is excited to go back and continue working on details.

The biggest lesson he learned from being in the final, he said, was to have no fear of the tall swimmers with impressive credentials, such as Nathan Adrian.

“It’s not as scary as I thought,” he said. “I can hang with these guys. Seeing Nathan Adrian towering over me is not going to scare me anymore.”
