San Diego State, Michigan Sweeps Highlight Weekly Swimming and Diving College Conference Honors

TUCSON – A few college swimming and diving teams wasted no time in getting into the second half of the 2014-2015 season, wrapping up intense holiday training with a dual meet to gauge their progress heading into the conference meets. For their efforts, some top athletes were given honors this week by their respective conference offices.

Big Ten Conference

Female Swimmer of the Week: Ali DeLoof, Michigan
The Michigan junior was busy in the Florida Keys at the Orange Bowl Swimming Classic, winning a couple of sprint events in the short course meters competition. She took the 50 fly in 28.02 and the 50 back in 28.90. She also helped the Wolverines win the 200 free relay and 200 medley relay.

Female Freshman of the Week: Emily Kopas, Michigan
At the Orange Bowl Swimming Classic, Kopas won both sprint breaststrokes and was a part of the winning 200 medley relay. Kopas was the only swimmer under 33 seconds in the 50 breast with a 32.91 and won the 100 breast by five tenths of a second with a 1:11.15.

Conference USA

Female Swimmer of the Week: Silvia Scalia, Florida International
Scalia led FIU to a first-place finish in its home event, the FIU Spring Invite, with victories in two individual events. The Italian raced out to the best finish in the 50-backstroke with a time of 26.51 before posting a mark of 5:03.83 in the 500 freestyle. The freshman just missed a third win as she was the runner-up in the 50 butterfly. Scalia has gotten off to a great start in her collegiate career as this is the third time she has been named C-USA Swimmer of the Week.

Female Diver of the Week: Alexa Elkins, Florida Atlantic
Elkins earned Florida Atlantic’s first C-USA Diver of the Week award after impressive showings at the FIU Spring Invite. The newcomer placed second in the one-meter dive with a final score of 256.60. The Davie, Florida, native also finished in the top-5 of the three-meter event, notching a mark of 249.30. Elkins previously qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships with her 272.50 score in the one-meter at the team’s home invitational.

Missouri Valley Conference

Female Swimmer of the Week: Marissa Yontz, Illinois State
Yontz had a strong showing at the 2015 Copa Coqui Invitational Sunday morning in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The Redbird senior won the 100-meter freestyle, with a time of 59.93, and finished second in the 50-meter freestyle (27.86). Yontz was also part of the 10×50-meter freestyle relay team that took first-place (4:42.70) and the 200-meter medley relay team that finished in second place (2:06.59).

Mountain West Conference

Female Swimmer of the Week: Chelsea Bailey, San Diego State
Bailey put a cap on 2014 with two individual event wins in the December 29 quad meet against Air Force, Incarnate Word and UC-San Diego. The senior won the 50 free with a 23.87 and the 100 free with a 52.21. She was also a key member of the winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Last Saturday in the tri-meet against Incarnate Word and Grand Canyon, she won both sprint freestyles again, and went faster with times of 23.40 and 51.80.

Female Diver of the Week: Alexandra Caplan, San Diego State
Caplan won three diving meets across two meets in the span of a week. She won the 3-meter event in the quad meet on December 29 with 329.35 points and then won both diving events in the tri-meet on January 3. She scored 324.50 points on 3-meter and 289.55 on 1-meter. Her 1-meter score was a personal best.

Southeastern Conference

Male Swimmer of the Week: Matias Koski, Georgia
In Georgia’s victory at South Carolina on Saturday, Koski recorded three individual wins and was on a first-place relay. He claimed the 50 freestyle with a time of 20.25, the 100 freestyle in 44.85 and the 1,000 freestyle in 9:07.10. Koski also anchored the 400 freestyle relay that won in 3:00.59. Behind Koski, Georgia won every individual event and both relays. The Bulldogs improved to 6-1 overall, including a 3-0 mark against SEC foes.

Female Swimmer of the Week: Hali Flickinger, Georgia
In Georgia’s win at South Carolina on Saturday, Flickinger recorded three individual victories. She claimed the 500 freestyle in 4:47.44, the 100 backstroke in 54.31 and the 200 individual medley in 2:00.83. Behind Flickinger, Georgia won every individual event and both relays. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 8-0, including a 4-0 mark against SEC foes.

Male Diver of the Week: Mauricio Robles, Tennessee
Competing in his first meet since Nov. 14, Robles took first place in the one- and three-meter events and took second place in the platform in the UT Diving Invitational. He scored a 387.40 in the 1-m, a new season-high. Robles later broke the 400-point mark on 3-m for the fourth time this year (won event with a 405.40). He scored a 364.90 in the platform, his first competition in that event this season.

Female Diver of the Week: Lauren Reedy, Missouri
Reedy continued her dominant 2014-15 season at the Tennessee Diving Invite, racking up two event wins over the weekend. She secured the 3-meter title on the first day of competition behind a score of 342.60. Sitting in third place after four dives, Reedy rallied with back-to-back scores of 57.00 and 65.00 on her final two dives to catapult in to first. She followed that performance by taking the crown in the 1-meter on day two with a score of 320.40. Reedy already owns the school record of 352.43 set earlier this season. She outscored 43 other divers to win both events. Reedy wrapped up the three-day meet by finishing 11th in the platform competition with a 212.50.

Male Freshman of the Week: Gunnar Bentz, Georgia
In Georgia’s victory at South Carolina on Saturday, Bentz recorded two individual wins and was on a first-place relay. He claimed the 200 breaststroke in 2:00.52 and the 200 butterfly in 1:49.66. Bentz led off the 400 freestyle relay that won in 3:00.59.

Female Freshman of the Week: Erin Metzger-Seymour, Missouri
Metzger-Seymour claimed the first event win of her career in the 200 Free, clocking a 1:51.90. Her personal best time of 1:48.76 in the event already sits her at 10th all-time in school history. Metzger-Seymour also tied teammate Danielle Barbiea in the 100 fly with a 55.74 and finished third in the 200 fly with a 2:03.77. Metzger-Seymour’s solid day helped Mizzou finish 3-1 in dual action, falling only to No. 14 Arizona.

Western Athletic Conference

Male Swimmer of the Week: Ilya Glazunov, Grand Canyon
Glazunov, a junior from Donetsk, Ukraine (Dragomanov National Pedagogic University) set two new pool records and took two individual victories in Grand Canyon’s win over UC San Diego and Incarnate Word. Glazunov swam the 50 free with a time of 20.17 and 100 free at 44.91 seconds. He also helped the Lopes with a win in the 400 Medley Relay and 200 Free Relay which also set a new pool record with a time of 1:22.23.

Female Swimmer of the Week: Michaela Paige, UC-Bakersfield
Paige, a junior from Lompoc, Calif. (Cabrillo HS) led the ‘Runners with a win in the 200 freestyle against the San Jose State Spartans this weekend. The junior recorded a season-best time of 1:51.45 in the event before finishing second in the 500 free with a time of 5:06.92. Not only did Paige drop her best 200 free time this season by almost three seconds, she managed to jump from just outside the Top 20 in the Western Athletic Conference to record the third best WAC time this season. Her mid-season 500 free time also ranks in the WAC Top 20 times.

Male Diver of the Week: Michael Bidak, Grand Canyon
Bidak, a junior from Scottsdale, Ariz. (Horizon HS) dominated the board with two first place finishes helping the Lopes to a win over UC San Diego and Incarnate Word this weekend. Bidak was victorious on the 3 meter board with a score of 275.55 and took first on the 1-meter with a score of 323.90 which ranks second in the WAC this season.

Female Diver of the Week: Lauren Reifel, New Mexico State
Reifel, a junior from Fortville, Ind. (Mt. Vernon HS) earned runner up honors in the 1-meter and 3-meter dives Friday afternoon against Pac-12 No. 14 Arizona in a frigid dual meet. Reifel scored a 267.00 on the 1-meter board and a 253.35 on the 3-meter dive to lead New Mexico State.
