Saint Louis vs. Eastern Illinois

CHARLESTON, Illinois, February 5. EASTERN Illinois men's and women's swimming finished the regular-season with a home finale split against Saint Louis on Saturday afternoon as the Panther men picked up a nice 104-101 win, while the EIU women came up just short, losing 132-72.

The two Eastern squads finished 7-2 and 3-6 in dual meet action for the men and women, respectively.

"This was a great way to end our dual meet season," said EIU skipper Matt Bos. "The women came up short but we are starting to see some really great performances and the men were able to hang on in a close meet.

"Saint Louis is a tough team and they raced well today. I definitely feel we are in a great place with 11 days to go before the Summit League Championships," said Bos.

Prior to the meet, the Panthers honored seven seniors — as Megan Eshleman, Ian Hoppie, Alyssa Lehman, Nathan Moritz, Sofia Pappanastos, Matt Scaliatine, and Cody Showers, who made their final appearance at the friendly confines of Ray Padovan Pool.

"I would like to thank the seniors for what they have done for our program over the past four years," Bos said. "I wish the women could have gone out with a win, but nonetheless, they all swam very well today."

Individually, the Panthers were led by seniors Eshleman, Showers, and Lehman, with each having a nice home finale by winning their respective 1000-Free (10:47.90), 50-Free (21.59) and 100-Back (1:01.53) races.

Other EIU winners included junior Rich Waszak who touched first in the 200-Free (1:44.65), as did sophomore Mike Lacine in the 200-IM (1:57.24), with both earning new season-best times in the process.

Fellow sophomores Ken Tiltges and Kelli Dicanio, meanwhile, also finished ahead of the Billikens with both winning their respective 100-Free (47.44) and 100-Breast (1:08.43) races.

In relay action, Waszak, Matt O'Hagan, Lacine, and Colin McGill teamed up to win the 200-Medley race via a new season-best time of 1:35.07.

The Panther squads will now have less than two weeks to prepare for the end-of-season Summit League Championship on Feb. 16-19, which will be hosted by league foe IUPUI in Indianapolis.
