NOTRE DAME, Indiana, September 25. RYAN Von Gunten, who joined the University of Notre Dame women’s swimming and diving program in the summer of 2013 as its operations intern, has been named assistant coach for the 2014-15 season.

In his 2013-14 role with the Irish women’s program, Von Gunten assisted in the general administration of the program, team travel, practice plans and filming practices. In addition to working with eight Irish swimmers who qualified for the NCAA Championships and more than 30 student-athletes, he also served as a coach for Irish Aquatics during the summer of 2014.

“This is a great opportunity for Ryan to be promoted from operations intern to assistant coach,” interim head coach Tim Welsh says. “Having been part of the team last year, he is familiar with the administrative side of the program. Ryan brings great enthusiasm, energy and passion to what he is doing. He is very committed to helping the Notre Dame women’s swim program grow and move forward.”

“I am extremely honored to have the opportunity to coach at an institution like the University of Notre Dame,” Von Gunten says. “I am looking forward to building on the success the team has had in recent years and the chance to work with and learn from Coach Welsh. He will be invaluable to my growth as a collegiate coach.”

Prior to coming to Notre Dame, Von Gunten served as a volunteer assistant coach with Indiana University’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams from April 2012-July 2013 and spent eight years overall working in the Bloomington, Ind., area. While on the Hoosier staff, he helped lead both the men’s and women’s teams to second-place finishes at the Big Ten Conference Championships in 2013. Von Gunten worked with nine men’s swimmers who earned All-America honors, two first-team all-Big Ten honorees and four individuals who earned second team accolades. On the women’s side, eight Hoosier swimmers garnered All-America honors, while five earned first-team all-Big Ten accolades and three received second-team all-conference honors.

A USA Swimming Coach, Von Gunten is a member of the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) and the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). Von Gunten is also American Red Cross certified in first aid, safety training for swimming coaches and CPR/AED for professional rescuers.

Following his graduation from Ball State University with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science in 2004, Von Gunten enrolled at Indiana University where he earned a master of science degree in kinesiology with a specialty in sports administration and marketing in 2006. After completing his undergraduate degree, Von Gunten worked in the Indiana University athletics department as intern in the compliance office for nine months as well as in the athletics ticket office for nearly three years. He served as the department’s compliance coordinator from February 2008-June 2011.

While living in the Bloomington area, the Bluffton, Ind., native also coached for the Indiana University Club Paradise swim team, the Bloomington High School South swim team and the Jackson Creek Junior High School swimming program.

While in college, Von Gunten competed as a member of the Tri-State University swimming team from 1999-2001 and later on the Ball State Masters Swimming Team from 2003-04.
