Ryan Murphy Leaps To 2nd in World in 200 Back With 1:54.94

Ryan Murphy uncorked the second-fastest men’s 200-meter back in the world during the B final at the 2016 Canadian Trials.

Competing in the consolation heat as part of the meet’s open international setting, Murphy sizzled with a 1:54.94 for the B final win.  That’s just behind Xu Jiayu’s 1:54.79 to stand second in the world as Murphy leapt Mitch Larkin’s 1:55.08 into second in the world.

Jacob Pebley, meanwhile, placed second in 1:56.40 to move to sixth in the world rankings.

Jeremy Gagne took a distant third with a time of 2:04.87.

They shouldn’t be putting him in the B final.

This is common practice during Olympic Trials for other countries. Natives swim in A finals.

It’s just how it works at an open national championship that also serves as a team selection trials. He’s allowed to go up there and get some swims in, but he can’t bump a Canadian from having a shot at the Canadian team or national championship.
