Rutgers Swimming and Diving Hires Jessica Barnes as New Assistant Coach

PISCATAWAY, New Jersey, September 7. CHUCK Warner, head coach of he Rutgers University Women's Swimming and Diving team, is happy to announce the addition of new assistant coach Jessica Barnes to the staff. "Jessica's analytical ability, experiences with championship teams, and commitment to coaching really stood out to me," commented Coach Warner.

Jessica had great things to say about her new position. "I am excited to join the Rutgers Swimming and Diving program, as the University provides a great opportunity for its student-athletes to excel. Rutgers has a long-standing tradition as being a top competitor in the Big East Conference, and I am proud to be a part of that."

A native of Glenmoore, Pennsylvania, Jessica swam at Penn. State University and graduated in 2007 with a degree in Elementary and Kindergarten Education and a minor in Kinesiology. She was a standout student, earning Dean's List honors seven times. She took part in two Big Ten Conference Champion teams as well as a runner-up squad which missed winning the championships by just a handful of points, and she was named Team Captain during her senior campaign. Her teammates and coaches also honored her as team MVP in 2007, and she was also given the Nittany Lion Award most improved swimmer in the same year.

Specializing in the middle distance freestyle events, Jessica is a seasoned veteran of multiple NCAA Championships and Senior National meets garnering two-time All-American Honorable Mention honors as well as being a two-time Academic All-American. She was a member of the student-athlete advisory board at Penn. State and was also an active participant in Athletes In Action.

Jessica ended her 17-year career in competitive swimming by diving right into the coaching arena. She helped coach BCAT Aquatics in State College and soon took on the assistant coaching roles for both the State College Area High School and Bellafonte Area High School swim teams before finally ending up at Rutgers. With her previous coaching positions as well as coming from a family of highly skilled coaches, Jessica brings a great deal of experience and knowledge with her to our team. Her attitude and work ethic have already begun to shine in the office and on the pool deck, and we are thrilled to have her join our staff.

Jessica's parting words were, "I am looking forward to helping this team achieve great success in and out of the pool."
