Ruston Claims Overall Team Title at Louisiana Division II High School Swimming Championships

SULPHUR – Ruston High School scored 604 points to run away with the combined team title Nov. 22 at the Louisiana Division II High School Swimming Championships, held at the SPAR Aquatic Center.

Alexandria High School placed second in the combined standings with 413 points, followed by Saint Scholastica with 400. Holy Cross and Ruston tied for the boys’ title with 392 points apiece, while Caddo Magnet came in third with 201 points. Saint Scholastica took home the girls’ title with 400 points, ahead of Alexandria (260) and Academy of the Sacred Heart (224).

Saint Scholastica brought home the first event title of the day as the foursome of Lindsey Parkins, Madeleine Rawls, Katherine Stolin and Brittany Pierce raced to a 1:54.73 in the girls’ 200 medley relay. They finished comfortably ahead of Alexandria’s Lauren Godard, Sarah Harrison, Brianna Serret and Annalise Ahrens (1:56.93). St. Thomas More placed third, with Grace Horton, Anna Claire Briggs, Allison Vizzi and Elizabeth Skinner posting a 2:01.21.

In the boys’ relay, Holy Cross earned a close victory over Ruston, as Paxton DeForest, Pedro Rivera, Joaquim Mitchell and Reece Reinbolt out-touched Jackson Boersma, Robert Kyte, Nolan Lofton and Austin Meng, 1:43.46 to 1:43.97. Caddo Magnet rounded out the top three with a 1:48.63 from Kyle Dockendorf, Alexander McDonald, Luke Keen and Reed Keen.

Ruston’s Kelsey Davis crushed her prelim time in the 200 free, dropping more than three and a half seconds in finals to take home the state title in 1:59.30. Marin Tichenor of Caddo Magnet also dropped time to finish second in 2:02.05, while Academy of the Sacred Heart’s Laura Bruce got to the wall third in 2:05.19.

Morgan Meyer made it a sweep for Ruston in the boys’ 200 free as he hit the wall first in 1:42.40, more than 16 seconds in front of Holy Cross’ Casey Nee (1:58.75). Cameron Roberts gave Ruston a 1-3 finish as he touched third in 2:00.38.

After leading off Saint Scholastica’s winning 200 medley relay, Lindsey Parkins returned to the pool to win a second event in the 200 IM. Parkins touched in 2:18.49 to race by top seed Hannah Choppin of Lakeshore, who finished in 2:21.76. Allison Vizzi of St. Thomas More rounded out the top three in 2:22.81.

Thomas Jefferson freshman Owen Martin got his high school state meet career off to a great start with a state title in the 200 IM. Martin overtook top seed Pedro Rivera of Holy Cross and dropped three seconds from prelims to win in 1:58.63. Rivera claimed second in 2:01.38, followed by Ruston’s Robert Kyte in third at 2:05.33.

Saint Scholastica’s Madeleine Rawls sprinted to a win in the girls’ 50 free, taking over six tenths off her prelim time to win in 24.53. Payton Gold of South Terrebonne wrapped up second with a 25.02, while Lakeshore’s Mackenzie McGuire came in third at 25.64.

In the boys’ sprint free final, Ruston freshman Jackson Boersma overtook Lakeshore senior Austin Marr for the state title, 22.65 to 22.86. Marr had posted a 22.59 in prelims but came up short of that in finals. Thomas Jefferson’s Cooper Chauvin swam a 23.04 to finish third.

Alexandria’s Brianna Serret rocketed to a 59.55 in the girls’ 100 fly, the only time under a minute at the meet. Academy of the Sacred Heart’s Laura Bruce came close, touching second in 1:01.13. Saint Scholastica’s Katherine Stolin swam a 1:03.66 to finish third.

Central’s Matthew Arnold concluded his high school career with an individual state title in the boys’ 100 fly. Arnold stopped the clock in 53.86 to top Terrebonne’s Alec Adams (55.25) and Parkway’s Dakota Schudalla (55.74).

Madeleine Rawls of Saint Scholastica picked up her second individual win of the day in the 100 free, stopping the clock in 53.28 to sweep the sprint freestyle events at the meet. St. Thomas More’s Grace Horton, the top seed after prelims, dropped time but wound up second in 54.14. Thea Martin of Thomas Jefferson clocked in at 56.02 to take third.

Ruston senior Morgan Meyer collected his second individual state title of the day in the boys’ 100 free, topping the championship final by more than five seconds with a 46.17. Meyer also won the 200 free earlier in the meet. Holy Cross’ Nick Galle got to the wall second in 51.88, followed by Caddo Magnet’s Luke Keen in 52.06.

Alexandria raced to a win in the girls’ 200 free relay as Brianna Serret, Erin Armstrong, Sarah Harrison and Annalise Ahrens stopped the clock in 1:45.10, less than a second in front of Saint Scholastica’s Gabriella Fouchi, Hope Winkler, Alyssa Navarro and Ally Spell (1:45.87). Lakeshore claimed third, with Hannah Choppin, Ashton Choppin, Mary Roth and Mackenzie McGuire posting a 1:49.18.

On the boys’ side, Ruston swam away with the title as Austin Meng, Cameron Roberts. Robert Kyte and Morgan Meyer touched in 1:32.74, about two seconds ahead of Holy Cross’ Nick Galle, Joaquim Mitchell, Nino Catalanotto and Pedro Rivera (1:34.70). Thomas Jefferson rounded out the top three with Owen Martin, Aidan Garrity, Cameron Stansberry and Cooper Chauvin finishing in 1:35.88.

In the 100 back, St. Thomas More’s Grace Horton was the only swimmer to finish under 1:00, as she stopped the clock in 59.58 to win. Saint Scholastica’s Lindsey Parkins swam a 1:01.25 to solidify second ahead of Alexandria’s Brianna Serret (1:02.85).

Ruston freshman Jackson Boersma took home the boys’ 100 back title in 55.89, just under half a second ahead of Caddo Magnet’s Reed Keen (56.35). Boersma also won the 50 free earlier in the day. Holy Cross’ Paxton DeForest, the top seed after prelims, settled for third in 58.51.

Lakeshore senior Hannah Choppin wrapped up her high school career with a commanding victory in the girls’ 100 breast as she hit the wall three seconds ahead of the next-closest swimmer. Choppin touched in 1:12.24 to top Saint Scholastica’s Anna Rawls (1:15.78) and Ruston’s Anne-Claire Rhymes (1:20.08).

Holy Cross’ Pedro Rivera closed out the final individual race of the day with a win in the boys’ 100 breast, just missing the 1:00 barrier with a 1:00.03. Robert Kyte of Ruston clocked in at 1:03.26 to take second, ahead of Caddo Magnet’s Alexander McDonald (1:04.29).

Katherine Stolin, Gabriella Pouchi, Brittany Pierce and Madeleine Rawls combined efforts to post a 3:48.81 in the girls’ 400 free relay, giving Saint Scholastica a win in the final event. St. Thomas More’s Elizabeth Skinner, Rebecca Dunn, Allison Vizzi and Grace Horton hit the wall second in 3:54.43, followed by Ruston’s Kelly Grace Boersma, Samantha Ann Akers, Madison Kaufman and Kelsey Davis (3:59.23).

Ruston claimed the boys’ 400 free relay title with Jackson Boersma, Ben Sawyer, Nolan Lofton and Morgan Meyer putting up a 3:24.91. Holy Cross’ Reece Reinbolt, Casey Nee, Lance Relle and Nick Galle finished second in 3:32.70, while Thomas Jefferson’s Owen Martin, Aidan Garrity, Cameron Stansberry and Cooper Chauvin took third in 3:35.30.

Results from the 500 freestyle events were not available.
