Russia’s Evgeny Lagunov Moves to Italy To Train With ADN Swim Project

Evgeny Lagunov

CASERTA – The ADN Swim Project in Italy, a group of elite international swim stars with Andrea Di Nino as head coach, has gained another major name with the announcement that Evgeny Lagunov is joining the squad.

Lagunov has been a major asset for Russian swimming for more than a decade, winning his first major international medal at the 2004 European championships in the 400 freestyle relay. The 29-year-old was a major player on relays through the next 10 years, helping Russia win the silver medal in the 800 free relay at the 2008 Olympics and bronze in the 400 free relay at the 2012 Games as a prelim swimmer.

Lagunov’s last appearance in the championship final of a relay for Russia since the 2011 world championships where he helped his country place fifth in the 400 freestyle relay. The move to Italy is likely an acknowledgement that he will need to get faster to set himself apart from the growing number of talented freestylers that hail from Russia in time for the Rio Olympics.

Lagunov’s arrival to the ADN Swim Project comes one week after the team lost Dutch sprinter Jasper Van Mierlo, who retired after financial troubles kept him from continuing to train in Italy, and after his home country prevented him from training at home. Lagunov will not face those issues, as a couple of his domestic rivals also train outside Russia. Vlad Morozov and Alex Sukhorukov currently train at the Trojan Swim Club in Los Angeles.
