Russian Revolution: Kapralov Beats Popov in 100 Free at Russian Trials

MOSCOW, May 24. ANDREI Kapralov overthrew the Czar, Alex Popov, in the 100 meter freestyle today at the Russian National Championships and Olympic Trials in Moscow. Both men had already qualified for Athens in this event.

Kapralov clocked 49.10 today, to nip the 32-year-old Popov, who finished in 49.25. Popov, the 1992 and '96 Olympic champion in the 100, is the former world record-holder in the 100 free and currently owns the global record in the 50 free at 21.64.

Earlier in the meet, Popov took the 50 in 22.26 seconds — 6-hundredths faster than his winning time at last weeek's European Championships in Madrid.
