Rosolino Wins Second Gold At Italian Nationals, World Champs Trials

LIVORNO, ITALY, April 11. OLYMPIC gold medalist Massi Rosolino (200 IM), he of the astronomical human growth hormone levels, won his second event in two days at the Italian Nationals/World Championship Trials, stroking to an easy 3:47.21-3:49.76 triumph over Emiliano Brembilla in the 400 meter freestyle.

Rosolino's time is second globally for 2001, behind only world record-holder Ian Thorpe's 3:40.76 from the Australian Nationals/WCTs in Hobart the last week of March. Thorpe's swim is the second-performance all-time — a mere .17 behind his wr 3:40.59 from the Sydney Olympics.

Brembilla was European champ in the 400-1500 frees in 1997 with times of 3:45.96 (then the Italian record and still his pr) and 14:58.65 — the latter still his best and his country's mile standard.

However, it was Rosolino who was his country's dominant performer at Sydney, going a national-record 1:46.60 in the semis of the 200, then taking third in the finals with a 1:46.65. In the 400 he took the silver with a pr-NR 3:43.40 — still No. 2 performer all-time (fifth-performance). And he moved to the "top o' the heap" with his gold-medal winning 1:58.98 200 IM swim — also a pr-NR and No. 2 performer of all-time (third performance).

So his 3:47.2 here augurs well for another "showdown at the ol' water hole" this summer in Japan against the favored Thorpe, of whom he was quoted by INSWEEP.COM before the meet began: "Thorpe is still stronger than us, but never say he is unbeatable. I thought the same about [Kieren] Perkins. Thorpe lost the 200 free at the Olympics but he has gotten the world record back so now he is No. 1."

Brembilla also was second in the 200 free yesterday with a career-best 1:48+ so he appears to be focusing more on the shorter races — with improved results.

(After the Olympics it was reported that Rosolino was among Italian swimmers who trained using the banned substance HGH — an accusation the Olympic champion denied.)

The other men's final saw sprinter Lorenza Vismara win an easy 50 in 22.32, a couple of tenths off his NR 22.06 from the 2nd World Military Games in Zagreb, Croatia in 1999. Second was Rene Gusperti (23.08).

In the 400 medley relay Fiamme Gialle used a 1:01.58 breaststroke split by Olympic 100 meter gold medalist, Domenico Fioravanti, and Vismara's 50.11 anchor to win in 3:45.27. Fioravanti was fastest in the semi finals of the 100 breast (1:01.94) and will be looking to improve his NR and Olymmpic record of 1:00.44 in the finals tomorrow.

In women's competition, Sara Goffi won the 400 free (4:15.56); Sara Parise the 100 fly (1:00.75); and Alessandra Cappa the 50 back (29.86).
