Rochester Welcomes Peter Thompson to Staff

ROCHESTER, New York, May 24. PETER Thompson brings a wealth of experience on both the small- and major-college levels as the new men's and women's swimming coach at Rochester University.

He comes to the River Campus after three seasons as the head coach at Niagara University. In addition to his role as head coach of both the men's and women's teams, Thompson was an instructor in the Counselor Education and Psychology Departments at Niagara.

Over the course of three seasons at Niagara, Thompson's teams set 17 school records and won three individual titles in the Middle Atlantic Athletic Conference. The Purple Eagles achieved more than 300 personal best times in that period, including 109 in the just-concluded 2006 season.

Thompson's teams showed significant progress in the pool, tripling their win totals in his first season (2003-04), then posting winning records in the MAAC in the 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons for the first time since 1997.

The women's team earned the College Swimming Coaches Association of America All-Academic award for five consecutive semesters. The men's team achieved the same honor in the Fall, 2005 semester for the first time in a decade.

Before his arrival at Niagara, Thompson was the head swimming coach, aquatic director, and Exercise and Sport Science instructor at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania from 1999-2003. Ursinus won a Centennial Conference championship in swimming under his tutelage and produced an NCAA provisional qualifier.

Thompson graduated from the University of Richmond in 1983 with a B.A. in ssychology. He earned an M.S. in counseling and human relations from Villanova University in 1988.

He coached on the scholastic level in the Philadelphia area from 1983-1990 (at the Marple Newtown School District). He became an assistant head coach at Team Foxcatcher in Newtown Square from 1990-92 where he worked with a U.S. Olympic Team Coach in development and training numerous senior and junior national qualifiers and finalists.

Thompson was the head coach at the Garnet Valley School District in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania from 1992-98. He became a sports psychology consultant in 1998. Since 2000, he has been the director of The Ultimate Athlete, a swimming technique camp located in both Lewiston, NY and Pottstown, Pennsylvania.
