Rice Tops Hurricanes, 159-103

HOUSTON, Texas, January 19. THE Rice trio of Brittany Massengale, Erin Mattson and Carlyann Miller won two events each to pace the Owls' swim team to a 159-103 dual meet win over visiting Miami-Fla. Friday evening at the Rice Pool.

Not only did Rice win 10 of the meet's 14 events over the Hurricanes, the Blue & Gray posted six different 1-2 finishes on the way to their eighth dual meet victory of the season. Massengale led a pair of 1-2 finishes with wins in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle. She had a sub-five minute 500 (4:59.51) and rallied from behind to take the 200 after trailing her teammate Miller at the midway point. Massengale swam a strong closing 100 to finish the 200 with a time of 1:53.50.

If not for Massengale, Miller could have posted three wins on the night. The standout from Fort Gibson, Okla., teamed with sophomore Diane Gu to take first and second, respectively, in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. The two sprinters later closed out the meet with Skylar Craig and Mattson for a Rice win in the 400-freestyle relay (3:34.07).

In addition to her spot on the winning 400-free relay, Mattson also claimed a pair of individual victories to extend a streak of winning at least one event in every Rice meet since a Dec. 2 dual at Texas A&M. The freshman halted some Miami momentum after the Hurricanes had won a pair of back-to-back events leading up to the 200-butterfly. Mattson went on to sweep both butterfly events, registering a 2:07.59 in the 200 and a 58.56 in the 100.

Another Owl freshman, Justine Lin, was sound and solid with a 2:05.33 to win the 200-backstroke. Junior Jennifer Hill took second behind Lin, but came back three events later to win the 200-individual medley in the closest race of the night. Hill swam a season-best 2:08.03 that was three-one-hundredths of a second faster than Miami's Britta Boesing (2:08.06).

Rice sophomore Caitlin Warner, a Florida native from Clearwater, posted a career-best time to win the 1,000-freestyle (10:14.87). She also had a second place in the 500-free (5:05.50).

The Rice swimmers are now 8-5 in dual meets this season. The Owls next face LSU and the University of Houston in a double-dual on the road in Baton Rouge, La., on Jan. 26-27. A full listing of the results vs. Miami can be viewed at the above link.
