Rice Rolls at Phill Hansel Invite

HOUSTON, Texas, November 22. THE Rice Owls put together a sensational evening at the Phill Hansel Invitational, nearly posting a swimming sweep.

Rice’s Cora McKenzie, Chelsea Fong, Marissa Konicke and Karina Wlostowska opened up the night with a winning 1:32.65 in the women’s 200 free relay. Idaho’s Erica Anderson, Kirah Monks, Rachel Millet and Megan Venlos placed second in 1:33.64, while North Texas’ Krista Rossum, Michelle Balcaen, Bianca Bocsa and Mona Groteguth took third in 1:33.81.

Rice went continued its strong night as Erin Flanigan captured the 500 free with a 4:48.87, while North Texas’ Jana Burkard touched second in 4:49.59. Rice’s Quinn Christian earned third in 4:49.95. Rice took its third straight title with a win in what proved to be a swift 200 IM with the top three all clearing the NCAA B cut. Shelly Patton won in 2:00.12, while Idaho’s Rachel Millet took second in 2:00.36. North Texas’ Rossum posted a third-place 2:00.98.

Millet stopped the clean swim sweep for Rice as she won the 50 free in 23.13. Tulane’s Mia Schachter finished second in 23.19, while Rice’s Konicke wound up third in 23.23.

Rice closed out a relay sweep as Taylor Armstrong, Rachel Moody, Casey Clark and Karina Wlostowska took the 400 medley relay in 3:44.15. Rice also took second as Shelly Patton, Lillian Marrow, Konicke and McKenzie finished second in 3:44.30. North Texas’ Groteguth, Rossum, Bocsa and Balcaen placed third in 3:44.42.

In diving, Idaho’s Paige Hunt rolled to a top tally of 312.90 in the women’s three-meter. Houston’s Natasha Burgess, who had posted 324.10 points in prelims, wound up second with 292.85 points during the finale. Houston’s Taylor Olanski took third with 285.95 points.
