Rhode Island Invitational

KINGSTON, Rhode Island, January 12. THE University of Rhode Island men's and women's swimming & diving team hosted the Rhode Island Invitational this Friday and Saturday at Tootell Aquatics Center. The women's team placed second with a total score of 783 points while the men placed third with a score of 650.

The University of Massachusetts swept the event with the men posting a score of 944.5, well ahead of second-place La Salle (825.5), URI and George Washington (539). The UMass women, meanwhile, captured first place with a score of 886, which was 103 points more than the second-place Rams. La Salle placed third (779) while the Colonials were fourth (563).

Senior Ryan Sheatsley (Allentown, Pa.) recorded the only first-place finish of the afternoon for the Rams in men's 500-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 4:51.39.

URI freshman Lillian Falconer (Chicago, Ill.) finished in second-place in the 200-yard IM with a time of 2:13.05. She also placed second in the 400-yard IM with a mark of 4:39.99. Classmate Samantha Veccia (Medford, N.Y.) recorded a second-place finish in the 100-yard break stroke with a time of 1:10.01. Additionally, junior Martha Ziolkowski (Toronto, Ontario) was second in the 200-yard break stroke with a mark of 2:11.79.

The Rams 200-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Matt Burak (North Easton, Mass.), senior Jason Jacintho (Dartmouth, Mass.), Sheatsley, and junior Derek Denard (Doylestown, Pa.) placed second with a time of 1:28.19. Later, the Rams 400-yard freestyle relay team of sophomore Gerard Donlevy (Lake Grive, N.Y.), Jacintho, Sheatsley, and Denard earned a second-place finish with a mark of 3:15.35.
