Fourteen year old Regan Smith took the second seed in this morning‘s 100 backstroke at the US Open. Her 1:00.31 established a new 13-14 girls National Age Group record in the event. Missy Franklin held the old mark with a 1:00.50 from Junior Nationals in 2009.

This morning Smith, took over a half second off her 1:00.96 from Olympic Trials. The 14 year old from Riptide Swim Team could still go even faster and lower the record further tonight.

This morning’s splits:

  2 Smith, Regan 14 Riptide Swim Tea 1:00.96 1:00.31
    r:+0.49 29.23 1:00.31 (31.08)

Smith finished sixth in Wednesday’s 200 backstroke. In that event she posted a 2:12.34, falling a second short of her seed time.
