Randy Eickhoff, Suzanne Heim-Bowen Are Double Winners at Lake Berryessa Swim

DAVIS Calif., June 7. THE Davis Aquatics Masters Swim Club (DAM) successfully hosted the 21st annual Lake Berryessa 1 and 2 mile open water swim this past Saturday (June 1, 2002). The event marked an end to the suspense following last year's event.

In July, DAM was told by the state Bureau of Reclamation that it would not allow the event to be held in the future. DAM appealed the decision, and with the help of Congressman Mike Thompson (of Napa), who worked with DAM to ensure that the Lake Berryessa Swim would continue, successfully reversed that decision.

The primary message from the Bureau: Car pool or be confined to the pool. It wanted to minimize the environmental impact to the area.

Congressman Mike Thompson arrived before the start of the day's events, gave a short speech, and received a well deserved round of applause for all his efforts. Thank you Congressman Thompson, from all the Masters swimmers who look forward to this annual event.

Race director Herb Marsden also deserves a round of applause for making this event one of the most enjoyable open water events.

The positive feelings were enhanced by a sunny sky and 72 degree water temperature. There was a total of 1145 entries in the 6 events. The breakdown by event was:

1-mile masters 402

2-mile masters 494

1-mile wetsuit 18

2-mile wetsuit 82

1-mile youth 118

500yd youth 31

Randall Eickhoff (Los Angeles, Ca) placed first in the 2 mile event with a time of 40:30:8, with Gerry Rodriques (Los Angeles, Ca) close behind at 40:31:2. Randall also placed 1st in the 1 mile event with a time of 20:07:10.

Suzanne Heim-Bowen (Walnut Creek, CA) was the first woman across the 2-mile finish line with a time of 41:18:0. Lisa Hazen (Saratoga, Ca) placed second finishing in 42:21:50.

The 1 mile race for women was a mirror image of the 2 mile race, with Suzanne Heim-Bowen once again finishing first (21:00:70), and Lisa Hazen second (21:28:80).
