NEW COMMIT: St. Charles, Ill. native Rachel Ponte has verbally committed to New Mexico State as a member of the class of 2023.

Ponte swims year-round with Saint Charles Swim Team. She swam to two new best times at the Illinois Senior LCM Championships in July and most recently competed at the NCSA Summer Swimming Championships in August. At the Illinois Senior SCY Championships in March, she finished eighth in the 100 breast (1:05.37).

Ponte also represents Saint Charles North High School and has qualified for the Illinois State Championships all three seasons of her high school career thus far. In 2017 as a junior, she swam the breaststroke leg of her team’s second-place 4×50 medley team.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at New Mexico State University!”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 24.47
  • 100 free – 54.62
  • 100 breast – 1:05.27
  • 200 breast – 2:27.77
  • 100 fly – 58.39
  • 200 IM – 2:08.00
  • 400 IM – 4:40.33

Ponte is a huge pickup for the Aggies when she arrives on campus for the 2019-20 season. Her best 100 breast time would’ve scored in the B-final at the 2018 WAC Championships. She’ll have one year of overlap with Ashley Reynolds who finished fourth in the 100 breast at last season’s conference meet.
