Queensland Sweeps Team Titles at 2013 Aussie State Teams Age Group Short Course Championships

CANBERRA, Australia, September 22. THE team from Queensland dominated this weekend en route to a sweep of the team titles at the Australian State Teams Age Group Short Course Championships. This is the team’s fifth straight win.

Queensland won the overall title with 1,914 points, while New South Wales (1,861) and Victoria (1,717) finished second and third. Five more meet records fell on the final day, for a total tally of 22 from the meet.

Sprint prince Kyle Chalmers, who broke 50 seconds as a 15 year old earlier this week in the 100-meter free, clipped the 14-15 200-meter free record with a 1:50.36. He also edged his rivals in the water with Benno Negri (1:52.29) and Caleb Hansford (1:52.40) taking second and third.

Braga Verhage broke hit fourth meet record of the weekend, this time by clocking a 28.91 in the 14-15 50-meter breast, to break Tommy Sucipto’s mark of 28.96 from 2010. Verhage finished ahead of Matthew Wilson (29.30) and Zac Stubblety-Cook (29.59).

Alex Milligan tracked down the 14-15 100-meter breast meet mark with a 1:03.19 to touch out Stubblety-Cook (1:03.25) in the process. Wilson captured third in the event with a 1:04.71.

Chelsea Gillett, who competed for Australian at the World Junior Championships, smashed a second off the 15-16 girls 200-meter free meet standard with a 1:58.21. She beat out fellow Worlds’ teammate Alanna Bowles (1:58.85) as well as Sophie Taylor (1:59.07) in a swift finale. Bowles followed up with a 2:11.55 in the 14-15 200-meter fly for the meet record.
