Quartet of YMCA Records Fall on First Full Night

ATLANTA, Georgia, July 31. DURING the first full night of competition at the YMCA Long Course National Championships, a quarter of meet records took a tumble in Atlanta.

To close the night, both relay records on offer were rewritten by the swimmers in attendance. Three teams undercut the YMCA record of 1:58.44 set by Upper Main Line in 2012 in the women’s 200-meter medley relay with Middle Tyger’s Ali Galyer, Savanna Faulconer, Kate Kelly and Katrina Konopka finishing with the mark in 1:57.53. Upper Main Line’s Emily Cornell, Emily Harris, Maddie Zimmerman and Shannon Rauth finished second in 1:57.91, while Triangle Area’s Kelsey Lawton, Oliia Ontjes, Haley Bishop and Jenny Nusbaum took third in 1:58.28.

Somerset Valley followed by crushing the men’s 200-meter medley relay mark. Dylan Sali, Zack Warner, David Chung and Brad Zdroik smoked the YMCA record with a 1:44.00. That beat the previous record of 1:46.44 set by Upper Main Line last year by more than two seconds.

Individually, Door County’s Conner McHugh finished the day with the men’s 50-meter breaststroke record as he popped a 28.53 in prelims. That swim blasted the previous top time of 29.47 set by Sean Johnson and McHugh in 2011 and 2012, respectively. McHugh later won the finale in 28.70, while Somerset Valley’s Zack Warner took second in 28.78. Triangle Area’s Olivia Ontjes posted a 32.82 to win the women’s 50-meter breast after clocking a 32.76 in prelims to set the YMCA record. That swim beat the 2010 mark of 32.78 set by Emily Weir of Wilton Y.

In other action, Middle Tyger’s Ali Galyer topped the women’s 100-meter backstroke in 1:02.90, just missing the record of 1:02.73 set by West Shore’s Tricia Weaner in 2004. Somerset Valley’s Dylan Sali took home the men’s 100-meter back crown in 56.51.

Kishwaukee’s Caitlynn Moon demolished the women’s 400-meter freestyle field with a 4:20.60, while Hickory’s Sava Turcanu won the men’s 400-meter free in 4:00.63. Middle Tyger’s Savanna Faulconer raced to a 2:18.39 to win the women’s 200-meter IM, while Triangle Area’s Colin Ellington nearly topped the YMCA record in the men’s 200-meter IM with a 2:05.34.

Middle Tyger’s Katrina Konopka snared the women’s 50-meter free crown in 25.84, while Middle Tyger’s Robert Borowicz earned the men’s 50-meter free title in 23.60 with Zdroik just behind with a 23.62.

Last night as distance free opened the meet, Kishwaukee’s Caitlynn Moon won the women’s 1500-meter free in 17:06.46, while Wilton’s Ian Rainey took home the men’s 1500-meter free in 1:59.78.
