The purple team came out on top over the gold team in the annual LSU swimming and diving Intrasquad Meet Friday afternoon at the LSU Natatorium.

“We’re about a week and a half into our training cycle. It’s good to see people step up and race. With almost 20 freshmen on the team, it’s good to see how they compete. Relay wise, I just needed to see people swim certain things and see certain splits,” said LSU Swimming Coach Dave Geyer. “It’s a long season, and this is the first step in the process, so it’s about taking that next step next Friday when we have a real competition.”

The purple team was led by Matt Klotz, Lewis Clough, and Cameron Karkoska. Klotz picked up wins the mixed 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:38.02, and the mixed 200 backstroke, touching the wall at 1:49.88.

Clough was also part of the winning mixed 200 yard medley relay and also won the mixed 100 yard butterfly with a time of 49.46.

Karkoska started and ended the meet with wins as he picked up a relay win in the mixed 800 yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:10.82 and an induvial win in the mixed 200 IM.

Jake Markham, Ellie Baldwin, Lauren Thompson, Olivia Paskulin, Leyre Casarin, and Tyler Harper all won events for the purple team throughout the meet.

The gold team was highlighted by the performances of Luca Pfyffer and Karl Luht. Pfyffer won the mixed 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 56.64. Luht touched the wall first in the mixed 50 yard freestyle at 21.05.

Summer Spradley, Kit Hanley, Grace Horton, and Tennyson Henry also won events for the gold team.

In the diving portion of the meet, Lizzie Cui took home gold for the women, while Rileigh Knox came in second. For the men, Matt Phillip came out on top and Juan Celaya-Hernandez finished in second.

“I saw exactly what I expected to see today. There was some inconsistency, but also some success with what we’re working on right now,” noted LSU Diving Coach Doug Shaffer. “What I told them is that I liked what I saw as far as their spirit and their attitude. This is a fun meet, but we came here to compete. Every competition will get better moving forward.”

LSU returns to the pool to face Loyola and Tulane on Friday, September 29 at 6 p.m. inside the LSU Natatorium. The first 100 fans will get free jambalaya, and the next 150 will get LSU flags, car flags, and Tiger Tails.
