PRESS RELEASE:Cowgirl Swimming and Diving Wins Road Dual at San Diego State

Laramie, Wyo. January 21. THE University of Wyoming women’s swimming and diving team had a solid day as they beat San Diego State 136-107 in Mountain West Conference dual action, Saturday afternoon in San Diego, Calif. With the win, the Cowgirls improve to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in MWC dual action, while the Aztecs fall to 5-8 overall and 1-7 in the MWC.

The Cowgirls won eight of 13 events en route to the dual win. The Cowgirl 200 medley relay team started the dual with a bang as they swam to a first place time of 1:51.23. Swimming that relay were sophomores Rachel Leyes and Lindsey Russenberger, junior Heidi Thorson and senior Kenzie Kotby. Individually, five different swimmers won an event in the dual. Freshman Aimee Stinson won the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:27.35. Junior Erin Spadinger won the 200 IM by swimming to a season best time of 2:10.81. Thorson was victorious in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:00.03. Junior Tamara Lehnertz won the 500 freestyle with her season best time of 5:09.06. Russenberger placed first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.82.

The Cowgirl divers had an exceptional day as they finished in the top-three spots on both the 1 and 3-meter diving boards. Sophomore Ginni van Katwijk led the way as she won both boards with a score of 260.10 on the 1-meter and 285.89 on the 3-meter. Sophomore Brittany Wainwright placed second on both boards and junior Emily Keefer finished third in each event.

“We had a very successful day,” said UW swimming and diving coach Tom Johnson. “The divers had an awesome day and really carried us to the dual win. We had some great performances but there are some areas where we need to improve. We were touched out in a couple of events which cost us some points. However, I was very pleased with today’s win and am very proud of how the kids responded after two weeks of very tough training.”

The Cowgirl swimmers will join the men next weekend to host MWC rivals Utah and BYU. Wyoming will dual with Utah on Friday at 5 p.m. and BYU on Saturday at 12 p.m. Both duals will be held at Corbett Pool. The divers will spend next weekend in Colorado Springs competing in the 2006 Air Force Diving Invite.
