PRESS RELEASE: Purdue Defeats Arizona State in Men’s Action

TEMPE, Arizona, January 9. FRESHMAN Chris Etherington recorded the second fastest 100 butterfly mark in team history in leading the 15th-ranked Boilermakers to a 182-165 win over Arizona State Saturday.

The newcomer from Kokomo finished the race in 48.80 seconds, which is second only to former Boilermaker Tad Sayce, who set the varsity record of 48.42 in 2001. In addition to his near record-setting performance, Etherington also swam on two winning relay teams. Etherington swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay that finished in 1:30.89 and swam leadoff for the 400 freestyle that completed the course in 3:03.73.

"The new additions definitely helped us this weekend," said head coach Dan Ross. "We probably would not have won without them."

The Boilermakers finished first and second in both relays. The ASU `A' relay suffered a DQ in the 200 medley relay and lost to Purdue's `B' team in the 400 free relay, 3:22.58 to 3:24.40.

In individual competition, the Boilermakers swept the top three spots in the 100 backstroke and the top two in both the 200 breaststroke and 100 fly. Sophomore Joe Colley won the 100 back in 50.54, with Romain Maire and Tim Watts coming in second and third. Giordan Pogioli captured the 200 breast title in 2:01.05 and Jin-Soo Kim was the runner-up in 2:02.59. Finishing behind Etherington in the 100 fly was Jon Ranochak, who clocked a time of 50.00.

Purdue completes its home season this Friday with a 5 p.m. meet against conference rival Michigan.
