Potomac Valley Swimming Regains Eastern Zone Long Course Championship Title

RICHMOND, Virginia, August 16. POTOMAC Valley regained the combined team title they lost last year at the Eastern Zone Age Group Long Course Championships Aug. 7-10 in Richmond, Va. Potomac Valley swimmers combined for 1,167.5 points, ahead of Virginia (1080.5), Middle Atlantic (959), New Jersey (730.5) and Allegheny Mountain (642.5).

Virginia’s Luke Durocher bettered four Eastern Zone individual records in the 11-12 boys division. He set marks in the 50 meter back (29.12), 50 and 100 fly (27.94 and 1:02.24) and the 200 IM (2:20.52).

Six others set two records each, including Adirondack’s Miranda Bacon (13-14 girls 100 and 200 breast, 1:14.50 and 2:38.22), Metro’s Maggie Aroesty (13-14 girls 200 and 400 IM, 2:22.45 and 5:04.69), New England’s Aaron Zhu (10-and-under boys 100 breast, 1:23.08; 200 IM, 2:36.72), New Jersey’s Vinny Marciano (11-12 boys 100 and 200 back, 1:02.18 and 2:15.71) and Caroline Gmelich (13-14 girls 100 and 200 back, 1:04.98 and 2:20.41), and Virginia’s Logan Burton (15-18 boys 200 free, 1:56.52; 100 back, 59.45).

Potomac Valley’s single-event record setters were Brett Feyerick (10-and-under boys 50 back, 32.93), Carrie Heilbrun (15-18 girls 100 fly, 1:04.49), Christopher Murphy (15-18 boys 200 back, 2:07.58) and Gabrielle Zhang (11-12 girls 200 fly, 2:22.45). Also setting Eastern Zone marks were Allegheny Mountain’s Mason Laur (10-and-under boys 100 fly, 1:09.63) and Alyssa Bixler of Middle Atlantic (15-18 girls 100 back, 1:05.62).

Heilbrun and Allegheny Mountain’s Kathryn Painter tied for the 15-18 girls high-point award, and Burton was the top 15-18 boy swimmer. Also taking home trophies were Katie McClintock, Middle Atlantic and Zhu (10-and-under); Sydney Winters, New England and Durocher (11-12); and Camryn Curry, Virginia and Samuel Tarter, Potomac Valley (13-14).
