Pool Records, B Cuts Aplenty as Dual Meet Season Gets Underway

BOULDER, Colorado, October 3. IN what was the first major dual meet weekend for many teams, swimmers smashed pool records and recorded a plethora of NCAA B cuts. Here are a few highlights from the weekend.

In the first-ever All Florida Invitational, the Gator men and women both triumphed over squads from Florida State, Miami, Florida Atlantic, Florida Southern, Florida Gulf Coast and Nova Southeastern.

Leading the way for the Gators were freshman Elizabeth Beisel and senior Conor Dwyer. In her collegiate debut, Beisel swam to victories in six individual events, posting NCAA B cuts in the 500 free (4:46.66), 200 IM (1:59.70), 100 back (54.11), and 200 free (1:48.42), in addition to wins in the 200 back (1:54.95) and 200 fly (1:58.75).

Dwyer showcased his incredible versatility by posting wins in the 200 IM (1:50.43), 100 fly (49.42), 100 breast (56.47), and 100 free (44.46), in addition to swimming legs on four victorious Gator relays. Senior Logan Storie and juniors Teresa Crippen and Sarah Bateman also had strong meets for Florida.

While the All Florida Invitational featured the best swimmers in the state of Florida, the Show-Me Showdown was held this weekend for bragging rights in the state of Missouri. The Mizzou men and women picked up the team crown, though the men faced strong competition from Drury University.

Senior Jun Han Kim picked up three individual wins for the Panthers, posting swift times of 22.32 in the 50 fly, 48.94 in the 100 fly, and 1:54.45 in the 200 IM. Meanwhile, Dominique Bouchard earned two victories for the Mizzou women with times of 56.36 in the 100 back and 2:09.39 in the 200 IM.

Several of the top teams in the Pac-10 also saw action this weekend. In their meet against San Jose State, the Stanford Cardinal won all but one event and posted a handful of NCAA B cuts in the process. Freshman Andie Taylor picked up three wins for the Cardinal, highlighted by a B cut effort of 1:48.58 in the 200 free. Kate Dwelley and Maya Dirado also earned B cuts in the 100 fly (54.27) and 200 back (1:58.60), respectively.

Southern California raced past Oregon State on Friday night, swimming some lightning quick times. Katinka Hosszu cruised to victory in the 200 fly with a B cut of 1:56.78, in addition to posting a strong time of 2:14.85 in the 200 breast. Presley Bard (54.32, 100 back), Haley Anderson (4:48.79, 500 free) and Lyndsey DePaul (53.22, 100 fly) also garnered B cuts for the Trojans.

This weekend proved to be a record-setting weekend for several other schools as well. At the Adams State duals, Adams State set an incredible six new school records in their meet against Mesa State and the Colorado School of Mines.

For the Liberty Lady Flames, their meet against Campbell marked their very first competition at the NCAA Division I level. They won six events, but fell to the visiting Camels.

Pool records fell in seven events at the Oregon State and San Diego State dual on Saturday afternoon. Leona Jennings of San Diego State had a phenomenal meet, setting three pool records in her wins in the 100 back (54.86), 200 back (2:01.06) and 400 IM (4:25.98).
