The University of Wyoming Cowgirl swimming and diving team raced past New Mexico State, 150-88, on Thursday evening in Corbett Pool. Wyoming broke a pool record in the 400 medley relay to open the night, as UW won 12 of the 13 events. The Cowgirls also pushed their unbeaten home dual winning streak to 15 with the victory over the Aggies.

“We just swam outstanding and I was proud of the way we worked and competed,” UW head coach Tom Johnson said. “We wanted to give some kids a chance to swim in different events and we just had great enthusiasm all night.”

The 400 medley relay team of sophomore Abby Sullivan, freshman Maria Harutjunjan, junior Molly Coonce and junior Emily Ridout broke the Corbett Pool record with a time of 3:47.53. It broke the previous pool record by the Cowgirls set last season by nearly five seconds. The Cowgirls won the 200 freestyle relay with the team of sophomore Mary Uselmann, junior Sarae Dydo, Sullivan and Senior Melanie McDonough clocking in at 1:36.16.

“I don’t know when we have been that fast during the season and it really set the tone for the rest of the night,” Johnson said.

Seven different Cowgirls won events on the evening with Senior Claudia Carlson and sophomore diver Kari Campbell winning two events apiece. Carlson picked up wins in the 100 freestyle with a mark of 1:56.36. She later added a victory in the 100 freestyle clocking in at 52.93.

Junior Lauren McClure added a victory for UW in the 1,000 freestyle with a mark of 10:43.31. Melanie McDonough won the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.68. Junior Emma Dow dominated the 400 individual medley clocking in at 4:35.89. Sophomore Emily Stevens held off freshman Connor Tarver to win the 100 backstroke with a mark of 57.90. Junior Nicole Hlavacek won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:07.28. Harutjunjan remained undefeated in the 100 breaststroke winning the race with a mark of 1:04.06.

Campbell dominated the 3-meter springboard with a score of personal-best score of 325.13. She also won the 1-meter event with a mark of 285.15. Sophomore Keely Bishop placed second on the 1-meter springboard with a tally of 275.92. Senior Holly Heussner finished third in the event at 245.30.

“I was impressed with the group tonight, but we hit our groove in the 1-meter and it is great to see them put it all together,” UW diving coach Chelsea Popplewell said. “Kari is having a lot of fun out there and she is just very relaxed and we need to keep it rolling.”

Wyoming returns to action next weekend as the Cowboys and Cowgirls will compete in duals against UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly on Friday and Saturday.
